Now days almost every patient with cancer will like to know
about supplements, vitamins and alternative therapies. So let's talk about that.
When I meet with a patient and the question comes up about vitamins and
supplements and other alternative medicines, I keep a very open approach.
I always ask patient to let me know about what is he considering and I am
honest about it because quite often we just don't know how these vitamins or
supplements or alternative medications will interact with chemotherapy. We
do know for some of them and I am often happy to share that knowledge with
the patient and advise them about that, but I also tell the patient he should be
aware that sometimes vitamins and alternative medicines can interact with
chemotherapy, can make chemotherapy less effective, and something that they
don't suspect is can make actually side effects from chemotherapy much much
more intense, so that is something to keep in mind and inform the patients about.
