Hey I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of BBK's cold air intake
kit system fitting the 3.9 and 3.6L motor found in all 99-04 V6 Mustangs. BBK is one
of the pioneers in late model EFI Mustang performance, and continues to make quality
parts that aim to get more power out of your ride. The first thing I noticed when taking
a closer look at this intake is that super bright chrome finish along with a splash of
blue throughout the intake, which is typically a calling card of any BBK product. Alright,
so we know it looks good, but how does it perform? Well, we're going to find out in
a minute but first let's check out what's included in the package. Of course you get
the reusable filter and the bright chrome intake tubing, but you also get the fender
mounting plate, these nice blue couplers, and all the hardware necessary for installation.
I can tell you that this kit from BBK will allow more air into your engine, by replacing
that ultra restrictive factory airbox with this 3 inch durable tubing, and that high
flow intake filter which sits right in the fender well, allowing for maximum cool air
which will equate to more power. In order to find out what are gains will be using this
intake, we need to grab a quick baseline number first, on our 2000 V6 behind me, and then
get to work installing the BBK. Getting the BBK bolted up to your ride is a very straightforward
task that should take you roughly an hour from start to finish using standard hand tools.
You will need to grab your factory MAF sensor and transfer it over to your new BBK, but
other than that, everything's completely plug and play. I will say in order to run this
cold air intake from BBK you do not need a performance tune, however we're going to upload
one of our custom Bama tunes which should really maximize our setup. This is going to
optimize our spark timing, adjust our air/fuel ratio, and firm up the shifts on our automatic.
With our intake installed and our tune uploaded, we're going to do one more pull on the dyno,
and see what our gains our versus our baseline numbers. For our baseline run with our automatic
2000 V6, gave us 156 horsepower and 192 ft/lbs of torque, with our BBK installed, we were
able to put down 170 horsepower and 203 ft/lbs of torque, making a peak gain of 14 horsepower
over our baseline numbers, and gains of 16 horsepower and 16 ft/lbs of torque throughout
the curve. The BBK's flashy chrome finish, decent power gains, and reasonable price,
make it an excellent choice for any New Edge Mustang out there and a great entry level
power mod. Be sure to check it out right here at AmericanMuscle.com
