I'd like to talk about another international movie star
Stanley Kubrick
Ricky, do you know that Kubrick's driver was italian?
Or, is Italian, he was his driver
he started as a driver and then became Kubrick's right-hand man
for more than 28 years
they worked together. He wrote a book, right?
Yes, his name is Emilia D'Alessandro, he lives in Cassino,
in his country house, with a garden, with chickens... and we went to visit him.
My father was a peasant
he always told me that the earth
gives you satisfaction
you can live by it
and I did that up until a certain age
but then
I left Italy
because I was about to be due
for call up
and I moved to England.
It was on January 1960 that Emilio D'Alessandro left Cassino
to avoid the National Service and
left for England.
Luckily I found this newspaper ad that said
if you have a car, the more you drive the more you earn
it was a private minicab company.
During his work he was called an evening
for a very special delivery, a weird object for a movie set.
The movie was Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.
One of his secretaries asked me, do you realise whom you are working for?
She said, Stanley Kubrick.
Never heard of him.
She said, you have to meet him, he wants to meet you.
Big beard, you could barely see his eyes
we shook hands
I thought he was the gardner!
He said, Stanley Kubrick. I said, Emilio D'Alessandro.
This encounter changed Emilio's life.
There I go. Stanley Kubrick... well.
Emilio started as a chauffer, then
as it always happened with Kubrick, the director asked Emilio if he could do
something else, and Emilio, lucky Kubrick, could always do
whatever Kubrick demanded
from simple daily-life tasks at home, to complex and delicate assignments
for movie business.
Bit by but, job after job, Emilio became the most trusted
personal assistant for Kubrick, so that
Emilio was the sole recipient for the keys to the private offices
in Kubrick's apartment, where only the director could enter.
Sometimes Kubrick tried to see if
he could make Emilio interested in his work, for instance during the making of The Shining
Kubrick asked Emilio if
the actor he had chosen for the main role, Jack Nicholson
was a good casting.
I said, why don't you use Charles Bronson?
Oh no, he said,
He's not into it at all!
But then, when I saw Jack I realised Stanley was right
Jack Nicholson
is the actor!
One day
I got a phone call,
a voice said, Stanley is dead.
I cursed, I told my wife
let's go and see it because I can't believe it.
When I entered the house
Christiane saw me
she opened her arms and went towards me
she said, Stanley isn't anymore.
I looked at my wife and I said, it's true then. It's true.
And that was it.
Emilio D'Alessandro
with Filippo Ulivieri, Stanley Kubrick and me
I was contacted by Emilio
to write his story.
It's been seven years since we first met.
This book to me is... it's like Stanley is still with me
we're always together.
All in all, Stanley Kubrick was
to me, like a father.
He treated me, and my family...
we were one family.
Our director told us a bit about it, but it's a wonderful story!
Emilio D'Alessandro, how I love him! You see, you deliver
a weird white object
and your life changes. Yes, indeed
he got to know so many people, directors, actors
What a splendid life! What a nice face!
And then, he left this big world
and came back to his small piece of land.
Beautiful, beautiful story.
