in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan which slammed into the Philippines
earlier this month
the rest to the world watched in horror as the devastation to the island nation
became painfully clear
the US military and international relief organizations
including the Red Cross immediately responded
also mobilizing to help was a group of some 500 nurses from Southern California
when nursing students at American Career College saw this group of nurses on the news
they wanted to help as well, so they teamed up with faculty and staff to
organize a drive to collect goods for the Philippines at various campus locations
leaders at ACC administration were inspired by students passionate desire to help
and decided to make a donation to American Red Cross International Services
today we're at the main administration building in Irvine were a check for
fifty thousand dollars was presented to representatives from the red cross
it's just a phenomenal gift and so so truly needed
especially when we see that the damage in the devastation that's happened
currently with the typhoon
in the Philippines so your gift is very generous and really heartwarming its
going to make a big difference for a lot of people
for some students and staff this is personal
I was born and raised in Manila and I am in our culture we
have you know what we call the bayanihan and it's kind of like
a spirit of communal worker, its sort of like a spirit of brotherhood or sisterhood
I am in awe with American Career College actually with David Pyle
for holding such an event like this and donating to the typhoon
I really was not expecting at all
our organization wouldn't be the organization it is today
if it wasn't for the support the Filipino community both from a student
perspective and also from the staff perspective, we want to make sure that we
as an institution contribute as much as we possibly can so very very proud to
to be here today to donate fifty thousand dollars
on behalf of our students, on behalf of our staff to the International Red Cross
it's known that Southern California is the second large population of volcanoes
but a lot of those Filipinos are hospital
members they worked for health care umm and it's important to us
at American Career College and West Coast so umm
it's a testament to our organization which I am proud to be a part of
items are being collected at all five ACC locations until November twenty-fifth
you can help by donating clothing, socks, blankets, or canned food
