G'day it's Rohan
and I thought we'd do something different today
I've been working hard in the studio so I thought we'd go on a little adventure to get what I think
is the world's greatest gelato
and I know that's a big call but this place very very special.
But first i want to talk about a common misconception
and that's that "bad foods"...
so-called "bad foods" -- things like ice-cream,
chips and chocolate cake and so on... make you fat.
It's wrong. It's totally wrong.
You'll hear this misconception come up all the time.
Quite often if I'm eating something like a burger
someone will say to me, "aren't you on a diet?" or
maybe they'll say "shouldn't you be eating healthy?"
And they're falling for this common misconception again that "bad foods" make you fat...
when the truth is that it's not bad foods that make you fat
it's overeating that makes you fat. And you can overeat anything. So what is 'overeating'?
That really depends on two things:
1) how much energy you burn in a day
and 2) how much energy you put into your body in terms of food in a day.
So how much energy do you burn in a day? Well you can learn more about that
in another video I did on calorie calculators (see the link in the description below).
The second question is, how much energy is in the food you're eating?
And this is this is a more complex issue because you know... it depends.
The reason why a lot of these "bad foods" get a bad rap is because they tend to
have a lot of energy in them.
So it's not that the foods are bad but more that our relationship with some foods are bad.
And being a super taster. I used to have a really bad relationship with food.
So for example
I would mow down an entire block of chocolate... and then I'd find myself
in the supermarket picking up another block of chocolate and saying to myself
"I know I ate the last block but this time I'll be disciplined and ration this one out over the entire week".
So sure enough, later that night, I'd eat all of it.
And sometimes my willpower would kick in and I'd say, "Rohan, stop!"
I'd put the chocolate away and go about my business... but then, a little voice
inside my head later on would be like, "hey, you know... the chocolate is just sitting there in the pantry...
you can go and get it any time... why don't you get a little bit right now?
So I'd take it out and sure enough, I'd demolish the whole thing.
Basically, I was totally out of control. I had a really bad relationship with chocolate and ice cream and all these different foods.
so what can you do if have a bad relationship with food like I did?
You can implement 2 rules. And not everyone is going to like these rules but they're not for everyone.
The first rule is the "no treats in the house rule"
because otherwise you might find that you just binge and eat all the food.
The second rule is to work before you reward yourself with food.
So you use food as a reward for doing things you want to get done.
And there's 2 really good scientific reasons why you might want to do this.
#1 research has shown that we actually enjoy treats more when we have to work for them.
So a bunch of scientists got together and found out that people actually rate the taste of ice cream better
when they have to do some work before hand
than they do if they can eat the ice cream whenever they want.
#2 when you work before reward and you say
"I'm going to complete the project today and then I'm gonna go reward myself with some ice-cream or whatever"
You're doing something called "positive reinforcement"
where you're actually conditioning yourself to enjoy that work more and even work more efficiently.
So there's 2 really good reasons why you can transform how you use foods to make you more productive in your life.
Salted caramel white chocolate, Darlinghurst (Sydney, Australia) gelato Messina
Amazing
But are eating foods like this the secret to getting shredded...
the secret losing fat? No - of course they're not. I'm not saying
that eating ice cream or chocolate or anything like that is going to get you ripped.
But we have to ask the question, If it's not bad foods that cause you to gain fat
and it's overeating,
then why do these "bad foods" get such a bad rap?
Well I think there's three main reasons.
#1 they're very calorie rich. So they tend to have a lot of fat and a lot
of sugar so they're easier to overeat
and especially because they taste so good.
#2 They're low in protein so they don't make you feel as full.
#3 They're not so nutritious.
So they tend to lack micronutrients things like zinc,
things which you need for your immune system and to run your body.
So how can you eat the foods you love and still burn fat?
Ultimately it's going to take a little bit of learning. You need to learn
how much energy you burn in a day and then you need to make sure you don't overeat
any foods that are calorific so that you don't
surpass that and go into fat gaining mode.
So it takes a bit of learning. Now most people don't want to do the learning.
So what do they do? Well, you can follow the general phrases like "eat like the French"
or don't overeat... but that's kind of vague.
The great irony is that a lot of people think that
tracking calories in tracking your energy is going to be really restrictive and really rigid
but the truth is it's actually liberating
because now you can eat whatever you want and still lose fat.
And remember as well that we all have our guilty pleasures right... so we all
have the foods that we love
So for me at the moment it just so happens to be gelato Messina
but I ask yourself. What's the food that you love? What's your guilty pleasure right now?
Because if you know what it is now you can use it as a reward, you can turn it around
from something that's making you fatter to something that's actually helping.
So ultimately, what I'd recommend is that you don't ban the foods you love...
because you're going to eat them anyway right...
So instead, optimally, just want a little bit about your body,
and that way you can incorporate your favorite foods into your lifestyle
without getting too fat
and even whilst burning fat if that's what you want to do.
So I hope you enjoyed this video, I hope you leaned something about
how to incorporate these foods into your life
And I'll catch you next time
