Throughout history women have made
important scientific discoveries
From different walks of life,
these women are connected
through their exceptional contributions.
Like Deborah Doniach,
who discovered that patients with Hashimoto disease
produced antibodies
against their own thyroid gland.
This led her and her colleagues
to identify similar events
in diseases, such as pernicious anaemia
and Type 1 diabetes,
leading to the concept of organs specific autoimmunity.
And Marian Ewurama Addy,
the biochemist
and first Ghanaian woman to become a professor of natural science.
Addy’s research focused on the biochemistry of plants
used in traditional medicine,
studying their safety, efficacy and how they work,
which led to improve treatments for diabetes.
We are looking for the next generation
of researchers and science advocates
to build on their achievements.
