It's not uncommon for researchers to make new discoveries from time to time, but to
un-discover something? One team of scientific explorers at the University of Sydney say
a Pacific island shown on several maps doesn\'92t actually exist.\'a0{\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK

\b \'93The group tried to visit Sandy Island, which can be found on many maps, but when
the scientists arrived they found only the coral reef.\'94
\b0 \ The now imaginary island was thought to lie
between Australia and New Caledonia and stretch for 16 miles.({\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK

A member of the research team involved in the un-find told{\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK

started when maps they were following during a separate expedition didn\'92t match up.\
\b \'93We saw this mysterious island on all the scientific maps and weather maps but not
on this one navigational chart that was on our ship \'85 So we decided to go see if it
was actually there.\'94 \b0 \

and it has even been featured in various publications for at least 116 years.\
But a publisher of The Times Atlas of the World explains having a perfectly accurate
map isn\'92t always guaranteed.\ \pard\pardeftab720\sa240
\b \cf2 \'93...back in the 19th century, cartographers would gather their information from various
sources like explorers or even sailors, so you could never have a perfect map.\'94

another voyager who set out to find the mysterious land mass. Apparently, not all maps makers
got the memo.\ }
