Noble Weesner has seen plenty of heavy rain in his life, but never floods like the ones overwhelming Conroe, Texas this week. “You don’t know it’s coming until it’s there,” he says, remembering the two-foot wall of water that struck him late one night. Shaken and displaced, he found his way to a Red Cross shelter, where volunteers are providing him with a safe place to sleep, clothes, food, and a shoulder to lean on. He’s one of hundreds of Texans staying in n shelters run by the Red Cross this week. Since Monday, devastating floods have taken lives, homes, and families’ sense of security in the greater Houston area. In response, the Red Cross is offering shelter, meals, relief supplies, healthcare, and comfort to people in need. Volunteers are distributing supplies in neighborhoods impacted by the flooding: food, water, medicine, and hygiene kits to keep people healthy – but also shovels, gloves, face masks, and other items to help families clean up the damage. Noble—who gave to the Red Cross for many years—now sees, firsthand, how donations like his are used during emergencies.
