Getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet are hallmarks to good health. Well, one
of our viewers wants to know, "What is the relationship between sleep, diet, and weight?"
It's really a fascinating area and there's been a lot of interesting research to suggest
that when you don't sleep enough, you probably are going to overeat and gain weight. So,
first of all, if you're not sleeping and you're you're rummaging in the kitchen at night.
That certainly is an opportunity to overeat. And generally speaking, you're not looking
for broccoli. So we tend to kind of eat snacky sort of foods. So it's just another opportunity
to eat when you have a sleepless night. But have you ever had a sleepless night and in
the following day you just never seem to feel full or satisfied, you're just hungry all
day long. Well the theory is that, we have, there are a couple of hormones called ghrelin
and leptin that regulate your appetite and your feeling of fullness. Well these can get
out of sink and they're kind of a checks and balances type of hormones that work to keep
your appetite in check and give you that feeling of fullness. But, when you don't get enough
sleep, they're disrupted. And so you might not get that feeling of I've had enough to
eat, and you just want to eat more. And it can also stimulate your appetite. So the studies
have suggested that you need to sleep about seven hours a night in order to be able to
keep the symphony of these hormones playing as they should and controlling what you eat.
So, indeed there is a relationship. And what you need to do is try to find time to get
everything done and get a good night's sleep so that you're not roaming in the kitchen
and that your hormones are helping you control and eat a healthy diet without gaining weight.
