>>Tom Matzzie:The essential ingredients for a 21st century campaign,
or whatever you want to call it,
the first and most important ingredient, is a compelling story
and that can not be underscored enough.
Because if you don’t have the compelling story
whatever medium you choose to try to tell that story through
isn’t going to matter
the second is not to put all your eggs in one basket
to try multiple ways of communicating, engaging people
and then measure those results and then keep trying, refining it
and working until it gets better
I think those are two essential ingredients
storytelling and then trying multiple things
and not being afraid to fail
that’s really important
People always ask, “What’s the most effective,
an online petition or a hand written letter?”
the answer is, the most important thing is to build your political power
it’s actually not an online petition or a hand written letter
it’s the perception of your political power
that lawmakers and decision makers have
and all of those things you do
are manifestations of your political power
your political power is the number of people you can organize and mobilize,
the reach you have in the media,
all those things combined
and so the goal of good organizing
is to build political power for your constituency
in order to make the change that you need in the world
and that’s the thing to keep in mind, there’s no magic bullet tactic
the goal is to create the political power to win.
