A brief word of welcome to the new Royal College of Defence Studies’ website. My name is
Lt Gen (retd) David Bill, I am the Commandant of the College. The College has a long and
interesting history from its formation in 1927. Throughout that history the College
has adapted and developed its curriculum in response to changing times. Today it challenges
and nurtures an international cohort of tomorrow’s strategic leaders through a varied and demanding
fare of high level quality education. It’s a superb place and in some significant ways,
I would say, unique. It attracts a very high quality of membership from all over the world
- some 90 people each year from some 50 countries including, of course, the United Kingdom.
Many of these after they leave here will rise to the very top of their various professions.
We are also fortunate to attract the very best speakers including Heads of State, key
opinion formers and leading experts in their academic fields. Our programme also includes
a number of broadening external visits including regional analysis tours in groups around the
world. We are cross-sector, cross-cultural and cross-national in our membership. We look
to attract membership from a broad section of cultures and experiences. Each year we
build a network of friendship and understanding amongst people and across boundaries which
in today’s complex world provides an exceptional and valuable network and developmental opportunity.
Members always say that they learn as much from their colleagues as from formal programme
here at the College and these friendships endure as I myself know having been a member
here some years ago. Most of our members and their families find their experience here
at Seaford House and Belgrave Square a life changing experience.
