here's the really really interesting story from PC Magazine
the sneers historian PC Magazine
do it which talks about arm
the FBI and the FBI approaching different software manufacturers
and very casually asking them to build the back door into their software so
that the FBI and authorities can kind of just login on their own as the case may
be and look stuff up
there was a recent Rs a security conference and Nico cell
was on stage announcing that her company wicker
is going to be making some changes to its users security
now weaker is kinda like a snapchat
but more secure and more closed off okay
and she said at the conference that the company's going to switch from
our essay encryption to elliptic curve
encryption saying that the service wouldn't have a back door for anyone
you don't even need to understand what these types of encryption systems are
just the point is
she goes up there he says we're switching from one security method
to another and it's going to be more secure period
as she describes it she leaves the stage Louis
and right away right in front of a whole buncha people not loud but just without
waiting for her to really walk away
a guy casually walks up to her and says hey and with the FBI
would you be interested in maybe just working in a back door for us so we can
access your data
very casual almost like you would ask just pay
and any interest in maybe just kinda grabbing a drink in talking about what
you're doing hey would you just work in a back door so the FBI can access the
data
your users in spy on them and she reacted in a way which most people
probably wouldn't
from what I've read a lot of people say we'd we'd love to talk to you are here
you know you get kinda
surprise that maybe you go along with your YouTube
react aggressively and she said hold on a second are
is this an official request from the FBI like are we is this on the record are
you here who are you representing
who is your boss do you have this in writing that you're asking me for this
backdoor
or is this like a off-the-record type thing and immediately Louis the FBI guy
started backing up in as she tells that Nico cell
went on and and lecture the guy about the first and fourth amendment in a
bunch of other stuff
that this is probably the exception right and that's the obvious question to
ask when you're casually approached as it seems is
is more common than people think is are you officially
asking me under FBI direction
to to build the back door for you and if so
give me that in writing that's the question that should be asked
and kudos to Nico sell for asking that question yeah
you know I don't know if I would ask that question because the
after all the things we've covered actor Robert talking was down about this
I would just assume it something shady is going on in that the vast majority of
the time
there is nothing official happening I image types
instances yet seems to well keeping keeping a a kind of distance
so that you can have this facade plausible deniability
is not uncommon but again if everybody simply said is this an official request
a lotta stuff that people don't like probably wouldn't happen
that's true I'm sure some people
I want to to help out go along with this just so that their
on the FBI's good side I guess you could say
