How to create and share password protected videos.
Let's assume that you want to create a password-protected video with some basic information or
instructions.
For example, a video where you: welcome new medical students to your clinic, demonstrate new
software to your colleagues, explain a map to foreign visitors, or provide feedback to a client
First, you need a headset with a microphone.
Then, you need to go to http://www.screencast-o-matic.com to buy a
"Pro Account".
In order to get this account, you first need to create an ordinary account and then upgrade it to
the Pro level.
When your Pro account is ready and you're logged into it, press the button "Start Recording."
However, this will not start the actual recording, it will open a recording frame on your screen.
Set the frame size to 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high.
And then, get the things that you want to show and discuss ready. In other words, open up the
PowerPoint or the images that you want to discuss and show to your viewers.
You might need to adjust the size of your files so that they all fit within the recording frame.
In the bottom left, click on the Microphone button, and select the headset microphone.
Test the microphone by talking into it and make sure that the volume meter is working.
Click on the red button to start recording.
During your recording, show your texts, your PowerPoint slides, your files, or images and talk
into the headset microphone.
Talk slowly and try to use a clear voice.
You can pause the recording at any time, if you want to switch between different texts, files, or
images and you continue by clicking on the record button again.
Keep the video short; 5 to 10 minutes is often enough.
When you are finished, click on the button "Done."
You will be asked "What do you want to do with this recording?" and you select the option:
"Upload to Screencast-o-matic."
Give your new video a title and don't worry, you can change this later if you want to.
Do not forget to enter a password.
Under the heading "Options," unselect the option "Users can leave comments," because we don't
need that. You can change this later also, if you want to.
Next, click on "Upload to SOM," which is the abbreviation for Screencast-o-matic.
As soon as your new video is uploaded, you will be given a link. Now, what I do is I copy this
link and paste it to myself in an e-mail.
Then, logout from screencast-o-matic.com.
Check your mail, and click on the video link, just to make sure that it is password-protected and
that the video looks and sounds OK.
Finally, give the video link and the password to the indented viewers.
Let me end with two things:
Firstly, I think that there's a risk that you will consider your content and the quality of your
video not good enough. My advice is that you shouldn't give that a second thought. Try not to
be too critical, and accept the fact that your video is good enough. I am 100% sure that your
viewers will find its quality and content more than acceptable.
Secondly, don't try to be too creative producing videos that are too complicated or simply too
long. If you feel that you must tell the viewers 50 different things, don't do it. Avoid
information overload and aim for simplicity and clarity.
At the end of your video, tell your viewers who to contact or
where to go for additional information.
If you still think that you must cover 50 different things, my advice is that you should make a
series of videos. Divide the 50 things into five categories and
create one 5-minute video for each category.
You see the overall idea here is that you want to create short and simple, informational or
instructional videos
And these types of videos are superior because they can be watched on a PC, a Mac, or on a
Smartphone anytime or any day, but no one likes to watch instructional videos that are too long.
So keep it short.
So, let me end this video here and now. And, good luck with creating your own.
