The court has given its sentence in the case of the truck driver
that crashed into a school bus last year in Ruatoki.
The driver has been sentenced
to five months' community service, nine months' supervision,
and is disqualified from driving for two years.
The judge said that he was fortunate the community was forgiving.
Joe Nika Morehu was charged with reckless driving
resulting in injuries to the children,
false logbook entries
and driving for over five and a half hours without a break.
Police say Morehu took the corner wrong,
forcing him to hit a bus that had stopped to let off children.
Morehu was also charged with drunk driving
because three months after the bus incident,
he crashed into a fence, a tractor and a pole
whilst driving drunk.
