When I first started playing, I thought of it as just fun for the evening.
I had no idea, how much poker will I play in the following few years.
Chips and Cards
No-Limit Texas Hold'em.
The most played card game ever.
The rules are pretty simple. Best hand after a few betting rounds,
formed of five cards on the table, and two in a player's hand,
takes the pot.
It sounds like a game of luck,
but everybody, who's ever sat down to play, knows it's not.
A good player, can get his chips in the middle when he's winning,
and save them, when he's beat.
All-in.
Two hundred and forty-five.
Call.
I've played this hand well. I'm ahead and I've made David put all his money in.
Unless something ugly happens, they are mine now.
The Jack will come.
YEAH!
That's the way!
He got lucky.
Luck has no effect on the game, it never stays forever.
My aces were better and if we'll repeat this play over and over,
the variance will diminish and I'll be the one with the money.
However, this is not what my poker evening usually looks like.
This is just a friendly game to cool down
This is what my poker evening usually looks like.
It would seem that this is pointless, that you can't see your opponents.
That doesn't mean that they're not there, not making costly mistakes.
I am actually pretty good at this, I've turned 25 bucks into 1000 in a year.
No gambling, just fair, good playing.
Betting when I'm ahead, but most importantly
folding, when I can't win.
No matter how good you are, you'll go on a losing streak someday.
Your aces are beaten by an ugly pair of jacks,
and your opponent hits a lucky straight, against your three-of-a-kind.
I'm in the middle of this right now.
I've lost half of my money in the last few weeks.
I know I played better, but they were just plain lucky.
If I'll keep playing the same way, I'll come out winning,
but it's tough to keep going, if you keep losing.
But this was a screw-up. I should've folded.
I should better have a break, before I lose everything.
Tomorrow is a day as well.
Hey Victor,
it's good that you show up, once in a while. How's life?
Nothing much.
What's going on? Your cards not going well or what?
You know what are you doing wrong?
You play too much.
You need time off, clear your head, and then sit down again.
Yeah, but I need to play a lot.
And that's why? You're making five times more than any of us,
you still live with your parents, so why so much money?
I've got quite a lot of friends in Canada,
and I have no real chance to see them and that feels like a shame.
You've got a lot of friends here!
Yeah, sure, truth.
But.. it still sucks.
If I want to go out with them or something, then what?
Nothing. I can't do the tiniest thing.
If you want to travel a lot, you need a lot of money.
You know what you should do?
What?
A rum shot. Or three.
I don't remember much from this night.
Marek came, then we drank...
and then I remember just pieces of dumb ***.
We'll all remind each other of this night, for a long time, because
it was just perfect.
I woke up unexpectedly alright in the morning.
I have felt an awful taste of everything I drank, but
the head and the stomach were ok.
When I think about it,
it was exactly what I needed.
I used to lose my nerve, now I'm playing calm.
I don't care about winning, but about playing right.
And now you might be thinking:
How does it end?
Will I make the money I need?
But then you misunderstood the story.
I've turned 25 bucks into a 1000.
And that wasn't luck.
It wasn't a coincidence.
I just played better.
So the question isn't if, but when.
