Mark: Hi, it’s Mark, Top Local Lead Generation, we’re here with John Nieuwenburg of W5 Coaching
in Vancouver. How’re you doing this morning John?
John: Really fine, thanks for asking me Mark.
Mark: So when is a good time to hire a business coach?
John: Yeah, that’s a good question. You know every time, any time, all the time is
a good time to hire a business coach. If you’re happy in your business and happy with your
life then there isn’t really much of a reason to get a business coach. But if you’re hoping
to get something more out of your business and/or something more to life, then now is
the right time to get a business coach. Getting a business coach is just one part of the decision.
The hard thing about getting a business coach is to commit to the process, to commit to
a process where you’re wiling to examine a lot of the assumptions that you’ve been
making and to commit to a process of growth. Any process of growth involves being a little
uncomfortable at times, having some stalls from time to time, being frustrated in the
process. It’s a little bit like I think if you’ve ever taken a golf lesson or a
tennis lesson or a skiing lesson, it feels like the right thing to do, but progress isn’t
always linear. It isn’t a perfect line of getting from here to there. There can be times
along the way where you just feel like you want o give up, throw in the towel and you
know, in my own case having taking skiing lessons and golfing lessons, it’s easy to
go back to what you did before because it’s comfortable even if you know for sure it doesn’t
work right. So getting a business coach is a little like taking golf lessons or tennis
lessons. It’s committing to a process. Working with your coach to grow and develop and eventually
get out the other side where you know you’ve seen significant growth and business is now
better, your life is now better. So anytime is a good time to get a business coach but
really what it means to get a business coach is to commit to a process of growth and to
accept both the highs and the lows of what that means and to commit to an outcome that
might be a month, it might be a year before you get there.
Mark: So I know for me, working with a business coach has been definitely, personally uncomfortable
at times because of the mirror that’s held up about my business being a reflection of
my own personal effectiveness and the decisions I make. So how do you help other business
others with that?
John: Well to be their best friend or as I said to an owner last week, I’m going to
offer you some love, it’s going to be tough love but nevertheless love, and so you know
coaching really is about helping someone explore the edges of their comfort zone. And what
I mean by that is any growth that we take takes place only when we get to the edge of
our comfort zone because if we’re not there, we really are in a place where we’re not
going to be growing much. So a business coach helps someone get to the edge of their comfort
zone and get comfortable there and at the same time help that owner not go so far past
their comfort zone that it becomes panic or the danger zone in typically in that space
you’re just kind of stuck because you’re just frozen in paralysis. So the best coaches
are those that help you through that period of what we call probation or being perturbed
or being in that place of discomfort and be willing to continue to stay there until you’ve
got the breakthrough that you’re hoping for. So it really comes down to a judgement
about working with different people and helping them get to that place of being uncomfortable
but at the same time not pushing them so far that it becomes counterproductive.
Mark: So if you’re looking for a coach who’s both compassionate, honest and extremely wise
and smart and ruthless, if I could even say that, John Nieuwenburg is the guy you want
to call or reach out to. Send him an email at john@w5coaching.com or check out his website
w5coaching.com. Thanks John
John: My pleasure. I think this is the first time and only time I’ve considered ruthless
a compliment. cheers
