THE RIVER'S FORGOTTEN
EPISODE 1 - WINEMAKERS
Paulino island is my home, my habitat, my everything.
I can´t even think about the idea of living in an apartment,
in any city, enclosed between four walls.
I think human beings, as any other animal or bird which inhabit this planet,
have been born to be free,
to act as they please
and go anywhere they want without any kind of barrier.
One day, a Basque man came and told me 'come to work with me, boy'
-'no, no, wait, I'll tell my mom and dad, where am I going to work?'
-'we´ll collect some grapes, I'll pay you'.
So I went and told my dad
-'hey dad, I'm going to collect some grapes'
-'when?' -'Today'
-'no, not today, today you are going to the mount with me,
we have to carry some sticks and I don't know what else, tell him you´ll go with him tomorrow'.
Okay then, I'll tell him, -'my dad said I can go with you tomorrow, because I have a commitment today'.
-'okay then, I'll pick you up'.
So the Basque man came for me at 5 in the morning.
So we went to collect some grapes, I got tired of collecting grapes, and I could never finish one plant.
But we had half-kilo grape bunches.
That guy taught me how to work,
how to speak,
he taught me everything.
I have an article
which says that this is America´s most productive area,
in 800 hectares, 3 million liters of wine,
700000 crates full of tomatoes,
400000 crates full of pears
and 10 million kilograms of various types of vegetables,
were produced around the 50s.
Everything used to be sold,
the coast wine was the only one consumed in Capital Federal and Gran Buenos Aires,
there wasn't another wine.
Give me a string,
we´ll leave it almost ready.
We have to go and look for that thing.
Let´s see, this and this.
We´ll cut that one.
We´ll leave these two here,
we have to cut this one, and we have to cut that one.
-'This one?' -'Yes'.
Okay, wait, I'll go and look for the string so we can tie it up.
We´ll plant it between the two of us.
-'Okay, okay'.
We, the people who work in this field,
really appreciate our forefather´s sacrifice,
who have drilled, penetrating the *** woodlands,
the scrublands, and the marshlands,
in order to establish the vineyards.
Although we haven´t found a trace from the old vineyards,
from time to time we see a vine
climbed and wound onto a willow up to the top of it,
looking for sunlight, in order to survive,
I say 'this vine is more than 100 years old'.
So, with more strength and more energetically,
I keep doing what I do.
When our dad brought us here,
we didn´t even know what it was, we didn't know any vehicle
or asphalt, we didn't know anything.
He brought us here, to Berisso.
I thought dad was bringing us to a better place, but he brought us to a worse one,
scrublands, mud, water,
and I wondered what would happen with my life,
just look where we are.
It was fun for me, because I was in a mount again,
but uglier than mine, it was dry over there, and wet over here,
you see, mud, rain, I don't know.
Do you know what Rubén told me?
You grab the grapes, take them over there and crush them.
Take them, crush them, and charge, take them and crush them again.
We have to work hard here,
what happens is that I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about this job´s issue,
it´s hard to live only from this,
if you can have enough from the vineyard.
And from our point of view, we don't want to be more than anybody,
in fact we are not, we are the way we are,
common people, as we came from Chaco.
We don't have any needs;
we want this to grow up again.
It has to grow up because we are doing everything possible.
Here, unfortunately, I'm the only one who is doing something,
there´s no one else.
Because of the issue that the lands weren´t ours,
one generation was lost,
and my generation was lost too, so that makes 2 lost generations.
And there isn't anyone behind me.
As I always say, I have the willow misfortune,
you see, as some people from Berisso must also have.
We were born here and we like it,
I don't want it to be lost.
There are many people who knew the coast wine from a long time ago,
and so it´s entering, they couldn't find such a good wine,
the genuine coast wine, so now it´s entering, it´s being sold.
The selling is by word of mouth.
I started making 200 liters,
and this year I made another 3900, I must have 4000 liters.
I can take almost 20000 liters from my vine,
and I have to make another piece of the vineyard.
It´s for that reason that I want to see if I can build a cellar,
because, what am I going to do? My hands will be tied?
Me, the wine, the grape, I'll keep planting and harvesting it,
then we´ll see what we can do.
