Hey, Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my brief look into the SR Performance
cold air intake kit fitting the 3.6 and 3.9L motor found in all 99-04 V6 Mustangs. This
budget friendly intake sports a very popular design when it comes to the New Edge Mustang
cold air intake kits. We're looking at an upper and lower intake tube that will house
your factory MAF sensor right in the middle, along with a high flow reusable intake filter,
heat shield, and all the necessary hardware and couplers to make for an easy install.
As you can see the SR Performance kit is done up in a very sleek, gloss black coated finish,
which includes all black couplers as well. This is sure to make a big visual improvement
versus your factory intake. Besides looking good, this kit will pull cooler, denser air
into your motor, by placing that high flow filter, right in the inner fender well. Not
only will we see a bump in power versus your factory airbox, but your V6 should also have
a nice little growl to go along with it. So the big question is, how much power are we
going to pick up using this intake? Well, in order to find out, we need to grab a quick
baseline number from our 2000 V6 behind me, and then get to work installing our intake.
Installing the SR Performance intake on your V6 is definitely a job easy enough for any
backyard mechanic to tackle in about an hour's time using basic hand tools. You will have
to transfer over your factory MAF sensor, over to the new SR Performance intake, but
other than that, everything's completely plug and play. I will point out that you do not
need a performance tune, in order to run this intake, however, we're going to upload one
of our custom Bama tunes which should really maximize our setup. This is going to dial
in our air/fuel ratios, optimize our spark timings, and adjust the shift points on our
automatic here. Now that we have everything bolted up, and our tune up loaded, let's turn
the rollers one more time with our V6, and see how we do. So our baseline run with our
automatic V6 gave us 156 horsepower and 192 ft/lbs of torque. With our SR Performance
installed, we were able to put down 167 horsepower and 200 ft/lbs of torque, making a peak gain
of 11 horsepower over our baseline numbers and gains of 14 horsepower and 15 ft/lbs of
torque throughout the curve. In the end, the cold air from SR Performance is a very well
rounded performer. We were able to pick up some solid gains along with our custom Bama
tune, it looks great under the hood and best of all, it's very easy on your wallet.
