The barracks included 16 families
8 families on the right and 8 on the left
Each family had its own piece of the barracks
Blankets would divide every family
There was a corridor in the middle
In the morning when one person woke up
everyone would wake up
so we would have to wake up together
There was a strong bond
because we had just been exiled out of Palestine
so there was love and kindness
that is missing today
This is in the blood of Palestinians
Just because I'm now living in a decorated place
doesn't mean that it's a substitute
For me I would rather live under a fig tree
in Palestine than say this is home
There was never sunlight in the (old) house
There was always a smell of mould
The walls were mouldy
The house was in very bad shape
My children were often hospitalised because of the mould
so the house was really bad
To tell you the truth, when we first moved back
my husband said that he didn't feel that this was home
I asked him why
he said "because I didn't build it myself"
and I told him that we can't build ourselves
and thank God that we had people to build for us
For me it's the opposite
I'm so happy with it
The kitchen
the old kitchen was really bad
I couldn't put anything in my old kitchen
not a refrigerator, not an oven
there was barely space for the sink
But now it is good
We suffer a lot in the winter
First of all, the rain goes through the pipes on the roof
and water comes directly into the house
because we don't have proper pipes installed
and I swear to God the water level gets up to here
When I come from the market
I find the water up to here
The bathroom is in a really bad shape
it needs tiles
because every time it's cleaned
dirt comes out of the walls
down to the floor
I want a place that I feel comfortable in
and that my kids and my family feel comfortable in
I have to accept reality and deal with it
if I had money I would have fixed it, but I don't
See the dust, this all affects us
If I don't dust for one day, it becomes horrible
I feel that I need to dust the moment you come in
As if we're living on the street
I wish my children could have their own rooms
that is the most important thing
that they be comfortable
Well, this is an old house
it can fall down any moment
The house during the summer is very hot
It is like an oven, really an oven
The temperature inside
is the same as under the direct sun
because the current roof does not protect the house
My grandmother, brother and I sleep in this room
My father, mother and little brother sleep in the other one
If I had my own room I would hang photos on the wall
make my bed with my taste
and have a separate cupboard for my clothes
I hope that my house gets better
but building this house shouldn't take away
my right to go back to Palestine
