Looking at the titles that are
in the competition it's really exciting because the subject
matters are all over the place. Being invited intimately into all these
different worlds is the excitement of documentary, and it seems like
the selection
is definitely gearing up for that. I always want to watch documentaries 'cause they end
up capturing something that's often so much more moving
than everything else that's out there. It's a shame they don't get more
release. And that was one of the reasons I was excited about getting involved with
the festival, was that I was gonna get to watch a lot of documentaries. I think
when you make a movie you have to look at what the films about, what the
story's about, what the themes are about, and then you try to create a
visual language that somehow helps to express that. I was trained in documentary
before I went into narrative film making.
I think my last two films, the ballet film and the wrestler film,
they fused a lot of elements that I was trained with. I stuck Mickey Rourke
into, surrounded him with, real wrestlers, and we, stuck Natalie, and surrounded her with
real dancers, and the idea was to try and
capture some of that reality. Because I think you need to do that,
you know, to make something very truthful.
