second emission of Vortex!
Thanks each and everyone of you for watching the show,
because you motivate us to keep going on with this project.
Thank you so much
for visiting our website
that has new sections.
Make sure to visit our webstore where you'd find DVD's on sale.
The videos had been digitally transferred from the original master tapes,
so that you can enjoy watching them with the highest quality of image and audio.
Thanks to Raymi7 who's behind the camera
and direction of the show.
...and thank you all very much...
...for following.
So buckle up, relax and let's journey together through this Vortex!
When we talk about bands that contributed greatly
to electronic music in the 80's...
...then it's impossible no to talk about the Australian band "Real LIfe".
David Sterry auditioned
after seeing an add in the newspaper,
where a guitarist was sought to start a band.
There, Sterry, met Richard Zatorski and...
...surprisingly, instead of forming their own band, they became composers and began...
...writing songs...
...for other groups...
...and they were really into that.
The original idea of forming a band together vanished completely.
While working on these projects, they met Alan Johnson (bassist)
who found them
through an ad posted on the local newspaper.
Johnson convinced the other two to form a trio and do some gigs,
to play live and such.
And they would do so, just the 3 of them with a drum machine on stage.
They toured Australia gaining attention locally..
...at first, and then in Europe.
While touring in England,
they made the decision to look for a percussionist,
a flesh and blood drummer.
Once again, they published another newspaper ad...
...looking for a drummer and became a quartet when
Danny Simcic was added to the line-up.
It is important to say that,
Real Life was the opening act for bands such as:
INXS or Midnight Oil...
...and as a result...
their fame began to grow,
and that's why they are so popular,
even until today.
Real Life was really a band of colleagues...
...because the members have never met each other before.
and none of them were friends in the past. A very unusual way...
...to start a band, isn't it?
Now, moving along...
today we'd like to show the video
of a song that was never an international hit...
but it was a number one in Australia and a top-ten song in Germany
along with
"Send Me and Angel" in 1983.
What's coming next is...
in my opinion, the best song on the album. I'm talking about..
"Catch Me I'm Falling" that came out
on their debut album.
Real Life's
first album was titled "Heart Land".
and it's the one that I'm holding.
It comes with a nice inner-sleeve,
with 4 promotional pictures of Steve, Richard...
...David...
and A. Johnson.
and on the back side we have the lyrics
for those of us who need to practice our English. On this LP,
there are great songs like "Openhearted",
their classic hit "Send me and Angel",
"Under the hammer", "Always"
and, of course, "Catch me I'm falling"
our next video
here on Vortex.
To start the second part we'd like to take...
the opportunity
to invite you to visit our website,
where you can leave your comments, suggestions and requests.
We also have
a nice selection of...
concerts, documentaries, live-appereances
and video compilations available on DVD,
edited by ParalisisNYC and specially made for...
our parties
and private screenings.
Our videos have the best
quality of image,
sound because they were taken from master tapes.
Well, having said that, Let's continue with our show
dedicated to the best of synthpop.
The next band is one that I hold dear...
...to my heart.
I'm talking about
the talented
Book of Love.
Book of Love's history begins when two school friends...
Susan and Ted Ottaviano graduated from their high school
in Connecticut.
Even though they both share the same last name,
they are not related in any way, in other words, they are not family...
at all.
A little time will pass,
and Susan
leaves Connecticut to attend...
the Philadelphia College of Art,
where she met Jade Lee and Celeste Ries..
and started a band, as a trio, named "Head Cheese" releasing a 45"
titled "Jungle Jam".
with Ted's collaboration as executive producer.
And although these friends where living in different cities,
they were always reunited by music.
Meanwhile, Ted moved to New York City
to study visual arts
and met
Lauren Roselli who was his classmate.
Ted, then, decides to make her a part of
the band,
consolidating Book of Love
in 1983. By April, 1st of 1986,
they released their eponymous album titled "Book of Love"...
...the one that I'm holding.
It comes with an inner sleeve with a promotional picture of the band...
in the front and in the back
the lyrics
for the songs on this LP.
This is a very special album
for me
because it was signed
by all four members of the band.
This was signed 5 years ago, in 2009
at the reunion show celebrating the 25th year
since the release of this album.
Prior to the release of this LP,
their label, Sire Records...
invites them
to be the opening band for..
Depeche Mode,
during the North American Tour for "Some Great Reward"
and the "Black Celebration Tour"
two years later.
What you are about to see
is the video clip
for their single "Boy".
A promotional video that was filmed for an Australian production house
that kept the video under circulation for a short while
and now it has become very hard to find amongst collectors.
Hope you enjoy this song...
here is "Boy" by Book of Love.
en 1983
Four friends from the city of Bissingen, in Germany,
formed the band Licenced Technology.
Only a year later, one of the members, left the band,
so the remainding three members
decided to rename themselves
as
"Camouflage", inspired by a song
from the band
"Yellow Magic Orchestra".
of the same name.
Camouflage's story
is very interesting
They began by winning a radio show
contest
and soon after recorded "The Great Commandment".
which appears on their debut LP
"Voices and Images" released in 1988.
This release caught the attention of Atlantic Records,
consequently
signing the band
to record their second album
titled
"Methods of Silence".
The singles on this LP were "One Fine Day"
and "Love is a Shield".
This is the album...
a gatefold version with promotional pictures of the band.
It also comes with
the lyrics.
To add to this review,
an interesting fact, was that
this album was produced by Dan Lacksman.
For those of you who don't know Dan Lacksman,
he was,
a founder of the Belgian band
Telex.
If you haven't listen to Telex you are missing out
on a lot. It necessary to say that
even though this album
was released by the end of the 80's, in 1989,
and the American Synthpop of the 90's
was putting out their first hits
this album was up to par because the recording work
included the use of saxophones, violins and guitars...
which turned this into a very peculiar album.
What we are about to show next
is a version of the song "Love is a Shield"
recorded live
for German TV.
That was "Love is a Shield"
by Camouflage.
A while ago, during an interview with Marcus Meyn...
he was asked what was the inspiration for this song? So he said that when he was
in New York City
to sign the recording contract with Atlantic Records,
he was in his hotel room watching a movie...
... and Ernest Borgnine movie...
and in one scenes Ernest Borgnine was telling the other character...
..that love is like a shield...
...so he was perplexed by this phrase..
and compelled him to write it down with the intention to use it
for a song
and that was the story behind
the inspiration for
this classic song.
Well, guys, that's all for today..
thank you very much for being with us
And thanks to Raymi 7,
who was in the technical arrangements, and of the production management
of the show
And (my self) your friend... Chuby242
says good bye, and see you in the
next show of this VORTEXXX...!!!
