(Music) There are a
variety of tuned percussion instruments. The timpani, the xylophone, the marimba, the
glockenspiel and the chimes. They can be used in symphony orchestras, or
smaller groups and some are solo instruments. The most commonly used in symphony orchestras
are the the timpani. They come in various sizes, from 500 to 800 millimetres in diameter.
The timpani has a sounding head, a copper bowl resonator and a foot pedal for controlling
pitch. Before playing the sounding head is tuned
to the desired pitch by screwing up the T handles at the top.
During playing the pitch can be varied over
a
range of
one
octave
by
the
foot pedal.
