Why isn't God more clear?
Why isn't it just more clear?
I want it to just be really simple.
Why isn't God more clear about the nature of hell?
It reminds me of a conversation that Jesus had with Peter
at the end of the book of John.
And then he says to Peter, You know what?
I have a prophecy for you.
Something's gonna happen to you when you grow older.
You're gonna be bound.
You're gonna be persecuted.
And Peter's immediate reaction is to say,
"Whoa, okay.
"What about other people?
"Can we talk about their destiny?"
And the conversation goes like this.
"Peter turned and saw that the disciple
"whom Jesus loved was following them.
"(This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus
"at the supper and had said,
"'Lord, who is going to betray you?')"
"When Peter saw him," that's John,
"he asked, 'Lord, what about him?'"
And what does Jesus say?
Jesus says, "If I want him to remain alive until I return,
"what is that to you?
"You must follow me."
I other words, whatever happens to him,
it's not your concern.
Here's your concern.
Follow me.
I think this applies.
It is fascinating that we should say,
"I have to have absolute clarity
"about the destiny of everybody else."
Actually Jesus says, "I can give you something that's clear.
"Follow me."
The good news is that the stuff we really need to know
for living our daily lives and following Jesus,
the Bible's really clear on.
And as far as figuring out the destiny
of everyone else in the world, there's some mystery.
What we do know is that there is a hell.
You do not wanna go there.
It is a place of justice and punishment
and we want to help people avoid hell
and more than that we want them to
experience eternal life with Christ.
And that is enough of a motivation to share the gospel.
