Today, I want to present you Porsche Cayman 2007. A brief look at the vehicle's history takes us all the way back to Porsche's plans around 1955. Around 1955-56, Ferdinand Porsche was interested in producing a light model with mid-engine design, for use in races in particular
To do so, the mid-engine design model with a total weight of approximately 550 kg, where the powerhouse was placed right behind the two seats, producing 136 hp was developed, with a very fast, very agile, and a very dangerous vehicle as a result
Spyder is most famously known as the model on which the idol James Dean lost his life. And after a while, the mid-engine design with two seats was shelved by Porsche
Then, around 1997, they thought 'why not another mid-engine design model'. The result was the Boxster concept, which entered into production in 1997. Porsche Boxster continues to be produced to this day
The production of Porsche Boxster began in 1997. Approximately 8 years later, Porsche comes up with the idea of producing a hardtop version of Boxster
The search for higher stability, better cornering inside the corners, brought about by increased body rigidity thanks to hardtop resulted in the design that was Cayman
The decision to produce Cayman was taken in 2005. Then, Cayman came to be seen as a threat to Carrera. For Cayman is too good, and a wee bit stronger engine would take its performance to levels matching that of Carrera
That is why in general Porsche makes it a point to keep Cayman's power ratings below those of Carrera. Then came the S model of Cayman. The Cayman is still in production, so it is a modern car...
My car is a Cayman 2.7 / 6-cylinder manual one from 2007. As a manual transmission enthusiast, I made a point of looking for a manual transmission specifically, and was successful in my search. I bought this car from its second owner
I have had it for a long time now, and the guy before me maintained it in good shape. So am I. The 2.7 liter engine produces 245 hp. The vehicle is equipped with sport chrono package and 5-speed manual transmission
The car reaches from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.8-5.9 seconds. Its performance is substantial; I mean, compared to its power rating, the performance is very high. In this sense, I could say it is a very balanced and refined vehicle
In particular, as it is a manual-transmission version, you can easily feel the torque and the horsepower. Previously, I drove the tiptronic version. Actually, you can say it is the other way around, as the tiptronic drives you, and you cannot command it as you like; you cannot feel the whole performance
If you ask about the fuel consumption in the face of such a performance figure, it is a most commendable and balanced one I could say. The vehicle consumes around 10-10.4 liters per 100 km, which is a very good figure for such a performance level, in my opinion. In this sense, it is not very harsh on the owner
Other than that; to date, I drove a large number of vehicles, around 30 I guess. I mean the sports cars I owned, and not the ones I borrowed from a friend for a quick drive
I mean the ones I actually lived with. It whispers to my ear "I can provide you with the power you need, and I am not very expensive on the consumption side. I am also very stable at high speed, strong at the corners, and instill confidence
You shouldn't really worry." In other words, Cayman is really something. Its body is definitely unique. Right behind you, the engine is guzzling with all its 6 cylinders, telling you "here I'm... come on, step on that accelerator"
But the placement of the engine is no simple feat, for, you see, the radiator, the cooling system is in the front, while the engine is in the middle
The water is being circulated all the time, while the fresh air received in the front, flowing through aerodynamic intakes cools down the water before feeding it back to the engine. In other words, building up such a closed circuit system is a trying task
Whatever you do, you cannot see the engine from outside. The engine needs to be cooled within the cabin. It is inside, right behind me, on my back if I may say so. It needs to perform all its tasks there. Cayman's engine is a pretty compact and successful one in this respect
The driving experience is a true pleasure. It really makes you feel good on that front. My vehicle has the sport chrono package
There is the sport chrono button. Let me turn on sport chrono now. When you turn it on, there is this a clock right in the middle of the body. Using that clock you can set lap time when you're on a track
When you turn on sport chrono, the vehicle's computer assumes the re-mapping position. And it reacts very quickly to acceleration. I cannot emphasize enough what a delight the combination of manual transmission and sport chrono is
. I don't know if you like it, but, it is comparable to... Ice cream on top of pudding with a caramel base. It is a really delicious desert
And now we have sport chrono on. Let's take the car to a smaller shift...
Yeah, here we have a traffic cop, and let's slow down a bit. It would be a trying experience to talk out of what we are doing
And there's this thing: after 5000 rpm, up to approximately 7000 rpm, the engine exhibits a completely different character
In higher revolution counts, many cars have this system, such as Honda's Vtec. I had an Alfa Romeo back in the day, and it had a system that changes the angle of the cam shaft above a certain rpm figure. The same system is present in Porsche as well
Past the 5000 rpm mark, the engine evolves into a true beast, assuming a different character. Valve timing, i.e. opening and closing times of valve, changes. A richer mixture is produced with more gasoline and air, providing an explosion of power
This vehicle could have been even more beautiful if it was equipped with 6 shifts, which would take the top speed higher. With the 5th speed, it reaches as high as 260-265 kph, but I believe a 6th speed could have taken it as high as 280-285 kph
But the important point is to drive safely and carefully, in consideration of the road. Yet another feature...
... I don't want a multimedia system, a screen here some system over there... The dashboard is focused on driving, and it is an analog one. There's the cd player and radio, and they are enough for me. There is also the electronic A/C. It is very strong, and you can set the temperature
Then again, there is this nice middle console, and a small compartment. Actually the car is not very rich in terms of compartment count
People always talk about the modular cup-holders of Porsche, praising them as a feat of German engineers. Yeah it's cool OK, but it is not a feat of engineering. The true feat here is about the engine and the layout of the vehicle
A most important advantage the vehicle offers in the league of sports cars is the luggage compartment. As the engine is located in the middle, we have a space of approximately 500 liters in the front and back combined
The rear view mirrors' elegant touches have aerodynamic functions, with a sleek touch to just cut through the wind. I compare them with the mirrors of M package of BMW
There are classic round ventilation grilles as a relic of heritage, from older speedsters and Carreras. I guess this layout will achieve a classic image as the car gets aged. Add the Bose music system on top, but with Cayman actually you don't feel the need for the radio, as the sound of the engine is a distinctive pleasure
The irreplaceable classic seats of Porsche are timeless. A mixture of leather and suede feels even nicer. The leather feels slippery at times. These don't. I did not ask for heated seats or other equipments
They all make the vehicle heavier. My vehicle is approximately 1280 kg, near 1300. 245 hp with a 5-speed transmission. Combined with the chrono sport package, it offers a pretty good combination
Yesss! We're going up from 3rd to 5th. The sound changes completely. The car goes wild after 5000 rpm
Yes, now we're at 205 kph. Trust me, when you go home and park the car, you'll immediately start thinking about the next trip
It is really enjoyable, and it needs to be experienced. It offers the old taste of Porsche. Unfortunately, each passing year changes the scene
The fuel consumption is one issue; getting higher power from smaller displacements is another. And then there are the horsepowers deemed non-kosher in our community -those produced by the turbocharger, even though I like cars with turbo; you can never have too much horsepower
These are the things you see. Now the boxsters and caymans come with turbos. 6 cylinders are screaming right behind you, and they take you to a whole new state of mind
If you have the means, get a 2nd hand Cayman in good shape, before they are ruined. Save one. This car would never go old or out of fashion. This vehicle offers that taste of old Porsche. That taste needs to be experienced and conserved
The 6-cylinder loud engine right behind you; a manual transmission under your hand... A car for pleasure focusing only on driving. The car is waiting for your orders. The automobile tells you "as your Porsche, I am ready for any corner, any handling challenge, any skill or performance demand
All you have to do is to provide me some direction. With you, I am ready for anything". And these cars are going extinct
As I said, I believe these cars should be acquired and experienced. I would recommend it to anyone...
Let me talk about the pros and cons of the car a bit now
I haven't seen any disadvantage. I mean none. Come to think of it... What can be a disadvantage? I am a bit on the taller side, with a height of 1.88 m. The view from the windshield looks like that of the visor of a crash helmet
But, compared to the other vehicles I drove in the past, compared to other sports coupe cars, the most comfortable and specious interiors is that of Cayman. It is one of the cars I felt most comfortable in
I won't find fault to it on that front. It is really comfortable, the seats and all. One disadvantage is this: it draws so much attention in traffic, anywhere practically. It is making people look
They all think it is more expensive than it is. That is because of the design, and the beauty of the whole thing. And that is a disadvantage. Some may think of it as an advantage though
On the pros side, many things I mentioned are advantages actually: An affordable sports car with high performance, spacious luggage compartment, comfortable interiors, comfortable for daily use
These are the advantages. Compared to the performance, fuel consumption is commendable. On the other hand, the looks, the drawing of attention may be an advantage for some, and not for others. It can provide a huge edge for our single friends
About the driving characteristics of the vehicle, one can note a wing system applying pressure on the back of the vehicle past the speed of 120 kph, at the cost of some aerodynamics
Above the speed of 120 kph, the wing rises and greatly increased the downforce at the back. You can use the wing manually as well. That wing system substantially affects stability at high speeds. That is marvelous...
It is also very stable at curves. Especially with the Carrera wheel rims I have. 18 inch. The back wheels have an offset of 10.5, the front 8.5. The base of the tires is very wide. The front wheels are 235*45*18, and the back ones are 265*40*18
The vehicle has a very wide track in the back. The vehicle gets narrower as you move from the back to the front. The sight is one for sore eyes, when you look at it from the back corner
The hips are wide, getting narrower as you move to the front. The shock absorbers and springs have just the right height, and balanced in terms of their rigidity
At times, they provide you the dynamism and rigidity you need for handling, and at times they provide the comforts over the road bumps in the traffic
This model of Porsche brings together the expertise, experience, and refinement the firm gathered through 70 years
I believe this vehicle has the right price-performance ratio. It needs to be driven, and kept if possible
See folks, I'd be happy if I was able to convey even part of the feeling of life with Porsche Cayman
