A U.S. Open streaming and viewing guide for Thursday
Tiger Woods headlines a deep field at Shinnecock Hills.
The U.S. Open tees off Thursday at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
Players are slated to work their way through the course from 6:45 a.m. ET until about 7
p.m. Streaming starts as soon as play does on USOpen.com and the US Open app, and the
TV broadcast starts on FS1 at 9:30 before moving to FOX later in the day.
The early featured groups on the championship website are the ones with Phil Mickelson,
Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy, and with Brooks Koepka, Bubba Watson, and Jason Day.
FOX Sports GO has a simulcast of the TV broadcast as soon as it goes live.
This tournament is a huge deal in any year.
It’s the national championship, and the 156-man field is typically great.
It includes 12 past U.S. Open champions, and, for the first time since 2015, that list includes
Tiger Woods.
The world’s most famous player hasn’t been on this stage since he missed the cut
while injured at Chambers Bay three years ago, and this tournament carries with it the
buzz that can only exist when Woods is playing well going into a major.
Woods’ last two starts were a tie for 11th at The Players Championship in May and a top-25
finish at the Memorial on the first weekend of June.
He’s had three weeks to do little other than prepare for this championship.
He’s among oddsmakers’ favorites.
The USGA consistently sets up its courses to be among the most brutal tests in golf.
Last year at Erin Hills was an exception.
Brooks Koepka won with a score of 16-under over 72 holes, tied for the lowest figure
to par ever in a U.S. Open.
That won‘t’ happen at Shinnecock.
This is the fifth time this Hamptons track has hosted the championship, and the last
two winning scores there were even par (Corey Pavin in 1995) and 4-under (Retief Goosen
in 2004).
The fairways are wider now than they were then, and perhaps the course will play easier.
But whoever wins this championship will probably have to grind to do it.
