How to become a sole proprietor. To establish a sole proprietor, you must contact your county
clerk's office for an application for a business license or business tax license. A business
license is required for most businesses except for some manufacturers and certain business
professionals. To apply for a business tax license, a business must have these things.
First, a business name, an address. In addition to the address, you must also include your
telephone number. Also, you must include the owner's name and address. Beyond that, you
must have a signature of each owner also on the form for the business license for your
particular county. Also when you're applying, you're going to be required to give your dominant
business activity. A lot of times your county clerk's office will classify your business
accordingly. You are going to be required by law to pay business tax for each place
in which your business is located and or the city or county in which collects the business
tax. Check with your county clerk's office for any specifics that may be applicable to
your business, but then also, you want to check with them for whatever your filing fee
is going to be. You should also check with your CPA or an attorney when filing for a
business license.
