Hey everybody! I'm John Brenkus. Today on this episode, we'll explore how playing in
cold weather can affect the golfer's performance. If the internal body temperature falls beyond
its normal range, mental and physical efficiency are negatively affected. On the golf course,
decrease coordination and strength are just two factors that can cause your game to suffer.
To put golfing in cold condition to the test, we brought in tour pro Jason Day. We put Jason's
body through a series of test after exposing him to prolonged cold. And 3, 2, 1. Go! Cold?
Yeah. Cold muscles and reduced blood extremity caused Jason's grip strength to decrease by
more than 50%. This is one reason why while cold Jason's swing speed slows by nearly 10
miles per hour, decreasing his carry by more than 20 yards. Playing in the cold is very
difficult. My body feels cold, it doesn't function the way it should. The swing is a
lot shorter, there's not a lot of speed there. I lose distance. It's important for my body
to be warm. When the body can't maintain thermal equilibrium, one way to regulate core temperature,
is through proper apparel. Like the CLIMAWARM+ outerwear, and to see how this jacket performs
in the cold, we put Jason back in our temperature controlled chamber before taking another swing.
3, 2, 1. Go! Incredibly wearing the CLIMAWARM+ outerwear, the power in Jason's swing is nearly
unaffected by the cold. Product engineers at Adidas turned to the Arctic Circle for
inspiration. The polar bear is the undisputed king of the cold and enjoys the competitive
advantage over other animals because of it's unique hollow firm. Adidas CLIMAWARM+ outerwear
features hollow fibers that are engineered to replicate the polar bear's fur. Air is
trapped in the fibers, and is warmed by body heat. This warmer air allows golfers to maintain
a constant body temperature despite the cold weather around them. If the body doesn't need
to work to maintain its thermally equilibrium, golfer's have more energy and their relaxed
muscles are able to perform in the same way it would on a warmer day. It is difficult
to play in the cold weather, but when you're wearing the CLIMAWARM+, it makes hell of a
lot difference. Based in the findings of this episode, it's clear that maintaining optimal
thermal equilibrium, plays a direct role in a golfer's performance. For more information
