Magic Story - Chronicle of bolas - A familiar stranger - Part 6 - Magic arcanum

Welcome to Magic Arcanum. I'm Ryan Gomez, here to talk about the Magic story. Today we're on Chronicle of Bolas: A Familiar Stranger. That's the sixth episode of an eight part story for Core Set 2019, available now. Yasova, Naiva, Baishya, and the rest of their group have reached their destination which is Ugin's tomb. They leave Tae Jin behind with a few guards because they still don't really trust him and they begin to work their way closer to Ugin's final resting place. First though, Yasova cries out a warning to the hunting party that is supposed to be camping here. She gets no response back though which is a little concerning because they should never leave this outpost undefended. Sensing danger, Yasova and the twins cautiously begin their approach to Ugin's tomb by way of a secret passage. Inside this hidden tunnel Yasova reveals to the girls lots of interesting artifacts, pieces of clothing, even some drawings on the rock walls. It's all part of their history. Yasova plans to pass it on to the girls so they can guard it and take care when she's gone. The three of them keep moving forward and come to a vantage point where they can see one of their own scouts making contact with what appears to be the sole survivor of the hunting band that's making camp here at Ugin's tomb. They watch in secret as the scout talks to this lone woman who says an illness killed everyone else in the camp and she's been suffering from these really terrible dreams and she needs help from Yasova specifically. From her hidden position, Yasova recognizes the shape of this woman as her friend Mevra but something about her seems off. You know it's been a while since we've added any new characters to the story, so may I introduce to you: Mevra, suspicious pregnant woman? Yasova says she needs a closer look and she leaves the girls behind so she can go investigate Mevra. Meanwhile Baishya feels compelled by the voice of Ugin to go deeper into the canyon. She wants to get closer to the hedrons that are all around his body. Hedrons are those little triangle things that are around the canyon. They're protecting Ugin and helping him heal from his big battle with Nicol Bolas, by the way. So Baishya walks right up to one on the canyon floor, finds it has like a little hidden door on the bottom, climbs right in. Her sister follows her. The two of them pass out and start to receive a vision. We get to see some more memories from Ugin. Some time has passed. He's become curious about what happened to Nicol Bolas back on Dominaria, so he planeswalks back there and he's upset to see that their birth mountain is covered in shrines that are designed to worship his twin. So he leaves again, figuring Nicol Bolas is just as egotistical as he remembered. This is kind of like when you Facebook stalk your ex and see that they're still terrible, but with magic! So Ugin spends thousands of years exploring countless worlds trying to get his mind off of his twin brother but he eventually succumbs to curiosity and he heads back once again to Dominaria to see his brother Nicol Bolas. He arrives right in the middle of Nicol fighting Arcades Sabboth and he tells them both to knock it off. Arcades flees but Nicol Bolas stands there paralyzed, in shock. Eventually he snaps out of it and is eager to show Ugin everything that he's conquered, so they fly all over the place, touring these massive battlefields until they arrived back at the birth mountain only this time there's no shrines or temples there; just a giant pair of curved horns carved out of the top of the mountain. So Nicol asks what Ugin thinks of his achievements in burninating the countryside, and Ugin says he's not impressed. In his travels as a planeswalker he's seen far more. And then he takes a dig at Nicol by saying that he expected better of him. Nicol is eager to prove that he could conquer anything given the chance and he asks Ugin to show him the secrets of planeswalking. Ugin starts to but then realizes he can't. He figures Nicol doesn't have the spark in him that will allow him to travel world to world. So Nicol gets mad, accuses Ugin of lying to him and Ugin decides once again, "I don't need this!" and planeswalks away. At this point, Naiva wakes up and for her the visions end. Her sister is still asleep and possibly receiving more, but Naiva has a moment where she kind of starts to doubt that any of this is even true. Just as she's starting to think this might all be made up, she notices somebody coming down into the canyon. It's Yasova, and she's wondering why the girls left the hiding place. Naiva explains as best she can; she makes a point to say that she's starting to doubt the truthfulness of these visions. Yasova expresses her own concerns: she thinks Mevra's dead and they're dealing with an impostor. Then she checks her granddaughter's eyes and asks her if she's been hearing any whispers in her own head. Yasova concludes the only way to get to the bottom of this is to join Baishya inside the hedron and hear more of Ugin's story so, in she goes. Naiva seals it up and then starts making her way back towards the safety of the hidden archives when who should come walking down into the canyon? Mevra! Naiva digs in her heels and confronts this familiar stranger. After Naiva appoints out that Mevra's feet aren't even touching the ground, Mevra gives up the ruse. Her face peels open and out pops Nicol Bolas himself! He promises Naiva anything she could ever want if only she would tell him where he can find Yasova and Ugin. Naiva asks why, since Ugin is already dead and Nicol Bolas says "yeah, that's what I thought too, the first time, but I'm here to finish what I started and with your help we can kill Ugin and make you the greatest dragon hunter ever." Will Naiva help Nicol Bolas? Will he have to use his mind-control powers to extract from her the secrets of the hedrons? We'll have to wait to find out because that is where this week's story ends. There's only two more episodes of Chronicle of Bolas left.
