Skrillex could best be described as one of the few artists to successfully
blend electro and dubstep to form some type of new genre.
Regardless of your stance on his music
you can't argue with the quality of this little gem that's been doing the rounds
lately.
Skrillex Quest is the story of what happens to the virtual residents of a
game cartridge when a speck of dust on the circuits threatens their very
existence.
Cue fond memories of true first world problems. Little did we realize back then
that methylated spirits and q-tip would have saved us from so much hardship.
The game, designed by Jason Oda is referred to as "advergaming"
- short-form interactive entertainment
that showcases a product or artist
(and in this case the music of Skrillex)
I personally really like [Skrillex's] style and this game is the perfect platform for it.
With a sense of solidarity and grandeur of the
grandfather of all games - The Legend of Zelda...
and wonderful pixel art similar to what was seen in Superbrothers Sword and Sworcery,
Skrillex quest is a heartwarming adventure highly
reminiscent of 3D Dot Game Heroes,
and that is no small compliment.
it is never shy to make fun of itself or break the fourth wall
Skrillex Quest puts you in the role of P1
P1 must collect [five] hidden keys spread throughout the land and use them
to set free the princess ghost
With her help, you must defeat
the evil Glitch DJ (Skrillex)
and free Skrillex Quest from the ever-advancing glitches that
threaten to erase its inhabitants.
I am not making this up.
There are so many classic gaming references thrown in for the nostalgic
each section of the game gives the player a limited amount of time to
collect items and perform the tasks necessary to progress.
Some of the items top up your timer
You need to experiment with which order to collect them in if you're to have
any chance of success.
If the timer runs out, you are simply, and
forcibly, pushed forward in the storyline.
If you didn't manage to find all the items you need and can't manage to free
the princess ghost,
you're going to need to start over, taking a slightly different approach.
This mechanic combined with the detailed end-of-game statistics screen,
really provides the user with
quite a bit of replayability.
Those who do manage to best the game will find a nice little easter egg
vital to the game's plot.
The power of the browser
and the quality of work being created for it,
is simply astounding.
Jason Oda is a master of this.
As someone who's had the privilege of being able to sample
his work in the past,
I can say without question, that Skrillex Quest is no exception.
The art style and extremely well suited music sucks you in and keeps
you there for the duration.
I've never had such a feeling of satisfaction after playing a browser game.
Skrillex Quest is unique, beautiful and engaging.
Play it!
