PIERRE HABIS (Host): Hello, I'm Pierre Habis of Union Bank. Diversity is one of our most
closely-held values. This is why we're proud to honor Local Heroes in celebration of Disability
Awareness Month. Let's meet one of our honorees.
AL KOVACH: My name is Al Kovach, and I am the senior vice president of Paralyzed Veterans
of America.
Imagine being a very able-bodied, healthy person; and then waking up the next day completely
paralyzed.
The Paralyzed Veterans of America will come to your bedside when they find out you're
there; and they will take care of your housing benefits, monthly compensation, and they will
guarantee that you will get heath care for the rest of your life.
KOVACH ON-CAMERA TO PATIENT: "Especially when your brand-new injury, you need to have that
family there..."
AL KOVACH: When I'm engaged in sports it seems like people seem to want to ask more questions
about my disability. It's almost an awareness program on wheels. I loved serving my country
as a Navy SEAL, but I also love serving my country in a wheelchair!
