If you want to bring your family to Canada, be aware that you cannot sponsor immigrants
to Canada while you are in bankruptcy. Filing a consumer proposal instead allows you to
avoid this restriction. Remember that the sponsor is liable if a new
immigrant collects social insurance in the first 10 years of residence in Canada. (As
an aside, bankruptcy will not necessarily shed that debt).
I am not yet a Canadian citizen. Can I file for bankruptcy?Yes. Your Canadian debts must
exceed $1,000, and you must be resident in Canada or have assets in Canada. Filing a
bankruptcy has no effect on your application to become a citizen of Canada.
