John Emerson, Ambassador to Germany
[John Emerson:] Hallo Deutschland!
Mein Name ist John Emerson und ich bin der neue US-Botschafter in
Deutschland.
My first visit to Germany was in 1975, but it has changed enormously
since then.
I will never forget seeing the Berlin Wall, imposing and gray, in
the '70s;
covered with colorful graffiti when I returned on an exchange
program in the '80s;
and now remaining only as a line of bricks in the ground.
Through my professional experience in the world of finance,
I've seen the impact of a reunified Germany as a
strong global partner.
Having worked at the Clinton White House on trade issues,
I'm excited about the potential of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.
This is a top priority for both President Obama and
Chancellor Merkel.
For me, it brings my government service full circle.
The same is true for my wife, Kimberly.
[Kimberly Emerson:] That's right. I worked for the Clinton administration in
public diplomacy.
John and I both know that direct, people-to-people relationships
build the foundation for strong, effective partnerships.
[John Emerson:] And that's why we've been so deeply involved in the civic and cultural
life of our community.
Coming from Los Angeles, we love film and the performing arts;
playing tennis, golf and skiing;
and of course exploring that gorgeous California countryside.
The entire Emerson family, including our three teenage
daughters, loves music and sports.
We look forward to sharing our California with you and to learning
even more about Germany.
And like so many Americans, Kimberly and I have German roots,
and we look forward to exploring the deep connections between our
two countries.
Wir freuen uns auf unsere Zeit in Deutschland.
