“Oh, Derek! Why don’t you like pets?”
Uh, because they shed, they make your apartment stink and uh...frankly, I have no respect
for domesticated animals since they don’t use their claws to execute prey.
“No, Derek! I meant the games. With the z.”
Uh, because I have the ability to discern good things from bad ones. Plus, spelling
a word incorrectly on purpose should be punishable by slow and excruciating death.
“Oh, Derek...why are you wasting time with this gimmick?”
Because it’s Petz Fantasy 3D, and I’ll kill time any way I possibly can.
Released to the Nintendo 3DS in the summer of 2011, Petz Fantasy 3D is a game about pets
and fantasies and collecting orbs and...bronies.
So this game gives you the responsibility of caring for these nonexistent animals in
some fantasy land where it’s not enough to have a dog or a cat. No, pets have to have
some kind of crazy flying ability or...breathe fire. The idea is make them happy and collect
orbs with them. That lets you have new pets with a z, and the process unremorsefully continues.
And guess what? You keep the thing happy...by playing minigames. Feeding the helpless creature?
Minigame. Giving it a bath? Minigame. Just about all interaction occurs via minigame.
There are about six in all, and after a while, they just feel like busywork. Only filing
papers is actually more fun than spinning dishes.
Just eat the right one!
Once they’re sufficiently taken care of, you can access magical lands where you’re
collecting orbs. That’s where you get to do the flying and the platforming and all
the crazy things that actually seem awesome when all you’ve been doing is throwing a
soccer ball into a basket. Then you realize it’s all relative.
The game plays well enough, and there really aren’t any problems from a technical standpoint.
It’s just...it’s a very dull game with a very specific audience.
