Build a Gopro 60 Second/1 Minute, 360 Degree Quick Panning Timer

I wanted to show you a project that I've been working on recently. this is a GoPro timer that you've probably seen on youtube before. All the videos that I found were the 60 minute variety where you shoot time-lapse for an hour but i wanted something that would take video in a short period of time so i came up with this this is a sixty second timer. So it makes a 360 degree revolution in one minute. so that's uh... a little bit different than what's out there already. in my situation and i didn't want to hang around at the location for a real long time i just need to show what's in the area quickly, on video or do a nice smooth pan. So that's why i came up this. I'll show you a real quick demonstration of what the video looks like and then more come back and i'll show you how to put it together. The only 60 second timer that i could find, is this jumbo timer made for classrooms and kids obviously. It is made by Learning Resources and they also make a sixty minute version the Jumbo Timer so be careful not to get that. You can find these on ebay, but i ended up getting mine from amazon. I think it was around eighteen dollars so it's not nearly as cheap as the sixty minute timers that you can find at Walmart or wherever. I'll show you how it comes.... That's what it looks like and it's pretty easy to take apart. Just take all these screws out, and the two haves come apart. Inside you'll find the timer like this.... I gently pried it off of the needle. I wasn't sure how fragile these are. These do not have very good reviews on the few that i could find on some websites. Some people have noted that they're fragile so i'm a little bit concerned about that. I was kind of amazed to find that there are even more metal parts in the these than the sixty minute versions. What i did was.... I ended up welding a 1/4 20 nut on the bottom that's so that it can be mounted on a tripod. For the upper part.... Again I wanted to use this with a GoPro so i took the dial off of a three dollar 60 minute timer that i bought at Walmart and I cut the handle off with a hacksaw ,then filed it smooth ,and then stuck on a GoPro adhesive mount. It seem like the quickest and and most secure way to do it at this point. When you cut off the handle it doesn't leave much plastic for this little mounting nub to be attached with. uh... doesn't leave much to be attached with so I put a little super glue around here just to help strengthen in a little bit. Then from that point they just mate up this way. Even though they're not from the same timer they still fit together perfectly. From there.... Just wind it up. I did cut out part of the bell so that it doesn't ring anymore. It's still pretty loud but it doesn't ring like it did. I just cut out a tiny little portion there. a lot of this design that i came up with uh... actually is not mine I've got to give a lot of credit to user name "getawaymoments" on YouTube. Look up his videos because he's got some great stuff on the time-lapse pan mechanisms. Some observations that i've had: For one thing, it's noisy. When you're filming a scene you can here the mechanism turning. That's kind of annoying but it's not going to bother me too much because i'll turn the audio off for the stuff that i'm going to do. It does induce some jitter into your videos. For small stuff it probably doesn't matter too much but for real large-scale high-resolution... on big monitors, it might bother you. I'm kind of concerned about how fragile it is because of some of the reviews that I read and also just the way that i have it mounted. I'm gonna test it this way and see how it works. If it breaks I'll have to come up with something else. I've also found, In my expierence, that I like to speed up the videos. Sixty seconds per revolution seems to be a little bit boring in some cases. So speed it up to twice as fast and that seems to be working for me. The timer is actually not real accurate it's more like 50-53 seconds around if that matters to you. Anyway, it's fun. Just another option for you. Thanks for watching!
