Under the Government's offer to sell state housing
to the non profit third sector
such as iwi and other interested community groups.
We caught up with the CEO Ngati Awa to gain his thoughts.
An old Maori proverb says that without feathers a bird cannot fly.
Carefully negotiating the Governments State Housing sell off
could also lead to achieving the best possible outcomes for iwi.
The Government wants to sell state housing to iwi
and other interested groups
so it can leverage the assets to build more social housing.
There are 400 state houses in Whakatane
with an estimated government value of $80 million.
At present, there are several other iwi
who are already in talks with Housing NZ
about transferring some state houses
to the non profit third sector.
An opportunity which is open to those who are ready.
