I am nurse Capitan first class Melissa López Santiago.
The flag is comprised of three colors.
We start with the color green,
which symbolizes de hope of the Mexican people.
Then the color white, which symbolizes the purity of the ideals of Mexico.
And finally the color red,
which symbolizes the blood that was spilled by our patriotic heroes.
The national shield is represented by a Mexican eagle
which shows us its left profile.
The eagle is eating a serpent
and its left talon rests over a flowering cactus
which was born from a lake.
Its wings are shown spread in a combat position.
When the national shield is presented in its natural colors,
they are the same colors as those on the flag.
This symbol, the national shield,
represents the consolidation of the people of Tenochtitlan.
The dependencies of the Federal Public Administration
have established an obligatory protocol
for hoisting the flag on February 24,
September 15th and 16th, and November 20th.
The flag will be displayed at full mast
on national holidays
and at half mast on mourning holidays,
like for example, the anniversary of the death of Mexican patriots.
On exceptional days, the President of Mexico is empowered to determine
whether the flag should be flown at full mast or at half mast.
In 1940, the president at the time, General Lázaro Cárdenas
decreed that February 24 would be known as National Flag Day
to commemorate this patriotic symbol.
The last modification to our flag, which is how we know it now,
was made in 1968
by the decree of the president a the time, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.
