I’m Melissa with Woolenton Optometry for Expert Village here to tell you how to choose
your eyeglasses. At every point in a person’s life they are going to need bifocal lenses,
and there’s three major types that you can choose from. The first would be a line bifocal
like this one here, where you have your distance at the top and then you actually have a line
with a half circle and in that half circle is your reading. It’s great for somebody
that just needs something simple and inexpensive and does not really care about the cosmetic
appearance of a bifocal lens. The next step would be a trifocal lens like this here, where
again you have your reading and you have your half circle at the bottom. Midway through
this half circle is your intermediate distance. Great for computer work, or for anything at
an arms length away and then at the bottom of your second line is where you’re reading
is at. This is good for people who aren’t able to get adjusted to a progressive lens,
because not everybody is. And then the last step is a progressive lens, it looks the same
as a single vision lens, the difference being that it is done in the hourglass formation;
at the top you have your distance, then you have your intermediate in the middle and your
reading at the bottom. Again though since it’s done in the hourglass the outer portion
of the lens and the inside portion of the lens there does have some distortion that
lies in there, so you’re not able to cut your eyes from side to side to look at things
you actually need to turn your head and look. With the newest technology some of the lenses
have cut out a lot of that distortion but everyone still has a little bit so you still
want to be careful of which ones you choose and obviously the better the lenses the less
distortion there is going to be. So you might have to put a little bit more money into it
but it’s usually worth it to do that. And if you aren’t able to get adjusted to the
progressive check with your optician because most of the time they will go ahead and trade
it out for lined trifocal or a lined bifocal at no charge since you are not able to adapt
and those are your three types of bifocal lenses.
