Joao de Deus is a Brazilian trance healer. And his work, his existence theorem, in the words of modern science
for spiritual healing and spiritual surgery. And it contradicts the western paradigm.
The data you will see is a synthesis of videos taken between 1999 to 2002.
Joao de Deus is the best known of thousands of Brazilian "psychic surgeons".
He works in a modest clinic in the small town of Abadania near Brasilia; the capital of Brazil
at his clinic which is called, "The Casa de Dom Inácio", named after a Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order.
In the Casa approximately 15 million people have been treated over 15 years at this clinic.
And this group includes thousands of doctors, scientists, celebrities, television crews from most of the nations of the world,
and they have been doing this - recording the data - for many, many years.
Several books have been written about Joao's work and yet he is virtually unknown in the United States.
One very important characteristic of the clinic and Joao himself is that no one is required to pay anything for any attention.
No one. The place is supported entirely by goodwill offerings.
"So I'll just go over the way the work operates here...
...The nature of the healing here is spiritual healing; it's often called a "spiritual hospital".
And so that implies different things to going, to say, a physical normal hospital.
It means that we're more than passive recipients of the healing; we actively participate.
And how we are and who we are affects the way the healing proceeds here for us.
And that's a very complicated thing, because what we bring here with us is much more than physical bodies
and much more than a disease with a label or an injury with a label. We bring our whole lives.
We bring everything that makes us up as human beings. So we bring our past, our traumas, we bring our belief systems,
our ideas, our religious beliefs, we bring our hopes, our dreams for the future.
We bring our relations with family and friends. We bring our whole genetic history. We bring our bodies of course,
we bring our spirits, we bring our mind and emotions. And all of this makes us up as people. As human beings.
And all of this is available to be healed here. And it would be crazy to believe that all of these aspects of ourselves
are not, in some way, connected; are not in some way a make-up of one being and make us who we are.
And so it is that the healing here, where we may come to heal a physical problem or a physical disease or an injury...
...it may be that there are other aspects of our being that need to be looked at, need to be addressed, need to be healed
before the physical manifestation of the healing presents.
So it may be that we don't know what we really need. And it may be that healing proceeds slower than we expect.
Or in a different way than we expect. So the best thing we can do to help our healing is to try to be open.
Try to be as open as possible to change in whatever way it may come.
We may find surprises arriving in our lives after the healing here.
We may find old relationships, old wounds healing up. We may find ourselves a little easier to forgive people.
We may find our belief systems, our minds opening up a little bit.
So many of these things may be necessary before healing - physical healing - takes place".
You will see in the next series of operations as Joao performs...
...these are merely a few examples of hundreds of hours of video tape which are available.
The first example will be that of a small minor operation - taking out a small tumour.
Then you will see a similar operation on the breast of a young woman, in which he again takes out the tumour and almost flicks it away.
The second kind of surgery which he does is on rather large tumours, where he takes out almost a mass, one pound, in size.
And you can see the mass being taken out, and he does it rather crudely.
And people are kind of shielding their eyes, sometimes, in watching this procedure.
But you should be very, very sure that some of the statements which are made is,
"He's just a magician taking out chicken livers". Well, there'd have to be a lot of chickens to take out those livers.
All the physicians and the thousands of doctors that have been there, thousands of nurses...there is no chicken liver.
This is just what he does. Operating on human beings and taking out tumours, etc, from them by this very simple technique.
He also does a lot of work on eyes and the nose and throat.
And some of the operations are very scary. For instance, you will see him performing an operation with his eyes bandaged
while he's working on the eye of another patient. He does this to prove that it is not he who is doing the operation,
but a spirit entity which guides his hands.
The most interesting examples, perhaps, hinge around the commonalities of what he does.
What does he do that is so challenging to us?
You will notice that not a single one of them leads to any bleeding. Sometimes there are a few drops of blood,
but he's cutting up people in all kinds of positions. Brain surgery, breast surgery, thigh surgery, and there's no bleeding.
It's amazing.
Second point: there's no pain. No patient ever feels any pain.
Third: there's no sepsis. Imagine - there's no sterilisation. You can see his hand with his ring going into the body, coming out of it,
You can see that there's no particularly sterile tools being brought, and his hands are sometimes not washed,
and he's yet performing these surgeries. That is extremely challenging to any paradigm we have.
Most importantly, as was given in that introductory speech by the English speaking supervisor,
it is a spiritual setting. Everything there - Brazil is a highly spiritual country, it has a system of belief,
the entire clinic is dominated by images and words and singing which reinforce the spiritual dimension.
Whatever is done is done within the idiom of spiritual healing as a reality.
So we can say that Brazil is a country deep in belief. And that makes it possible for its citizens
to have the benefit of such low-cost and risk-free surgery.
