DJ Trails with hiphopelements.com. We are going to go into a little scratch history
right now. For those who see all the scratching on TV, all of this stuff we are going to tell
you where it came from and how it started. This was founded in 1975 by a guy by the name
of Grand Wizard Theodore. He is a famous old school hip hop DJ and the way he actually
invented scratching was he was playing and practicing with his records in his bedroom,
his mom came in and yelled at him “turn the stuff down”, so he stopped the record
with his fingers as opposed to generally stopping it here. And he got this noise, while he was
listening to lyrics and started rubbing the record and that’s what invented the scratch
by Grand Wizard Theodore in 1975. Scratching today has evolved into a whole other thing
by itself. Basically scratching was first used as sound effects and so forth, but now
the turntable is actually regarded as an instrument and the person who really put down on the
mark was grand mixer DST when he did Herbie Hancock’s rocket record in 1982 I believe.
It was the first time that got exposed, it got to be played live with the jazz band on
television and so forth and basically with scratching to the beat you can create, manipulate
sounds of the records and actually play the turntable as an instrument and that’s scratching.
