RIVETT>>> My name is Susan Rivett, and I am the Senior Practitioner for the Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award in Buckinghamshire. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a self
development programme. It’s a fun way of really learning some new skills, making new
friends and having fun and enjoyment.
BOY ONE>>> For my Bronze, I did a two day expedition camping overnight. The second section
is the volunteer - which I helped out at my local Scout Group. I also did football for
my sport activity and finally, for my skill, I restored my dad’s tractor.
RIVETT>>> It’s often recognised by universities, by employers. It’s a non academic qualification,
so young people who may not be able to achieve so well with their GCSE’s, may have this
as an added extra.
BOY TWO>>> Certainly it gets you out into the countryside. You meet people you never
thought you would meet. Do things you never thought you would do. Really, it’s just
a new experience.
BOY ONE>>> The Youth Service have been amazing, like the way they train you up.
BOY TWO>>> I’ve definitely gained leadership skills. Been more confident. Been able to
make a decision and stick with it. Fitness has definitely improved.
BOY ONE>>> Basically, I wanted to make myself feel good and just achieve something that
I had never achieved before, like when I experienced the finish line of that hike: it was one of
the most amazing things. I can’t wait to do Gold!
