So surface crochet was a bit of a theme for our spring catalog this year for
spring 2014 at
Valley Yarns. We've got surface crochet in three different patterns,
the Sprig Mittens and Scarf set, the Hen Plaid Wrap
and in the Nordic Tiles set. Now this is just a standard granny square which is a
little bit different than the Nordic tile motif but,
the surface crochet on that, that sort of joins it all together is fairly
similar, so, we're
going to do a little demonstration here for the Nordic Tile set. You wanna start with
a slip stitch on your hook and the yarn is gonna stay
underneath the peace while you work. So you start right on the edge
and reach through the top of the
center double crochet there, on the side, see that, right underneath the top?
I'm gonna reach through and grab my yarn
bring it through and it's just a slip stitch.
Then I'm gonna go lower in this same double crochet
and go between the legs of the stitch, that little v
at the base of the stitch, I'm going to grab the yarn underneath and bring it up
and slip stitch. Reach through
bring it up and slip stitch. Again,
through the top of that center double crochet, bring up a loop,
pull it through the loop on your hook. Go through
base of the stitch, through the two legs at the base of the stitch,
bring up a loop, pull through the loop on your hook,
right through the center, same thing,
and then, working through these in the opposite way that you worked here,
through the two legs at the base of that center double crochet,
bring up a loop, pull it through the loop on your hook,
the top of the stitch.
So your just slip stitching to form a chain
from one side of the square across
to the other, and then you would chain
the number of stitches recommended in the pattern and then do the same thing
in the next square.
