I remember stepping off the plane in 1981 and interviewing
for a job at Texas.
And the bigness of it, the pride of it, the demand for
excellence of it, and everybody I talked to was just
right here for me.
And I grew up in a little town in Pennsylvania, very
conventional family, but I do remember one thing.
It was hard work and don't be afraid to take on challenges.
And to me, leadership is about that.
It's be fearless--
pragmatic, but fearless--
take chances, work hard, and be around a great place that
demands excellence and put better people around you.
I think that's how leaders lead and that's how, I think,
programs become excellent.
I tell our staff every day, Texas makes you better.
Texas makes you better.
If you come to Texas, if you're at Texas, if you work
at Texas, it makes you better because of the
people that are there.
And that's a good thing.
And sometimes, the coaches get a little bit proud of
themselves.
And I say, just take it to some other school and see if
it works there as well as it works at Texas.
The thing I love about Texas is being around the Tom
Gilligans, being around the Steve Leslies, the Bill
Powers, the Chris Plonskys.
Anywhere you look, anywhere you go on the campus, our
student athletes--
it's the place to be because the place just absolutely
grabs you and makes you better because you just feel the
pressure to be better.
