if you ask people to do certain things that they never imagined trying to do they just might do them too many academics are wrapped around the axle of how do I build my career the easy science to work on is what's au courant because you've got this community of you know it's a mutual admiration society you quote each other and you build a career and its more and more about less and less I took myself out of that game a long time ago when I said what were the tough problems you can work on tough problems that have societal impact and they force you to dig deeper into the underlying science. the students that work with me believing in science and service to society as opposed to science and service of career building take an ordinary person and put them in in extraordinary circumstances the result might be an extraordinary person many of them are never going to work in electrochemistry or energy storage they're just prepared for life PhD should be PSD problem-solving degree that's what it's about
