The number of electric cars on roads in Iceland is increasing.
And at this time it's mostly Nissan Leaf and Tesla that Icelanders are switching to
from their gasoline powered cars.
Tesla is known for it's great power
And we are really curious how Tesla would go against
high performance gasoline powered car.
We decided to select a classic high performance car
The BMW M5 with a 560 BHP
against the Tesla Model S on a 1/4 mile drag race strip
Bjartur you got more horsepower
How to you think this will go?
Yes, this is really exciting.
I've got a 507 BHP V10 engine
But only rear wheel drive.
So I will probably need more grip
So I am a little afraid of him at the launch.
But..
If I have enough time..
Then I will probably beat him with the torque later.
Probably, I don't know.
We will find out.
Gisli, if my calculations are correct then you are 94 BHP short of the BMW.
Yes, something like that.
Do you even have a break?
Yes, the good thing about electric cars is that you have the whole power right away.
You don't need to wait for it!
As soon as I hit the pedal, the power comes right away.
I've tried that, it's a bit funny.
Yes, that is really fun!
The gears are not in the way
Because there are no gears in an electric car.
That's why I thought the Tesla would have a good lead
on this powerful BMW.
And how did it go?
When we arrived, the sun was shining.
But all of a sudden, we were struct by warm showers.
And made the whole track soaking wet.
These kind of condition ruins the traction
On this smooth track which turns into a glass like surface.
And it's hard to deliver all the horsepower to the track.
So we decided to race from the other end of the track
Which has more coarse asphalt
That happened to be a great idea.
It's really fun seeing him in the rearview mirror!
That's a great feeling.
#$%& !!!
Well Hjörtur, this was really fun.
Yes, this really was fun. But as I knew the launch would be hard
I drifted a lot in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear
But later on I was right on his heels
If we had a longer track I would had won him with a glance!
But, but..
His launch was obviously a lot better
Gisli, your car has a limiter.
Yes, it's limited to 210 kph.
So when I reached 210 kph it was first then possible for him to go ahead of me!
Hehe!
One thing, Gisli, also really fun about this, you weren't spending that much money doing this.
No, that is true.
How much do you think you spent?
I think it was about 2 dollars (200 ISK)
You can't even buy icecream for that..
No it does not!
And how long would it take you to charge the car the amount of electricity that you spent racing?
This was probably about 60 km I lost during these races
And we were of course using very very much energy
I think that in my garage it would take me about 20 minutes to recharge that amount.
Your meter has probably gone down a bit.. Hjörtur?
Yes I can't deny that..
It's probably around 1/2 tank doing these races
But the fun is all that matters
And when I finish the tank I just go and buy more.
But guys, both amazing looking cars and they are expensive
But still there is difference in price
Gisli, what does your car cost?
This specific car, with all possible extras
Is about $168,000 (19m ISK)
But you can have it from $88,000 (10m ISK)
Yes.
But, this like this on it's about $168,000 (19m ISK)
Yes.
How about yours, Hjörtur?
Yeah, well I don't know exactly
But my car is of course old
It's 9 years old
Made in 2005
But I think it would cost brand new here in Iceland, straight from the dealer about $265,000 (30m ISK)
