Street View in Google Maps provides panoramic views of
places around the world.
From your local bookstore, to Broadway theaters in New York
City, to historic castles in Japan.
It can help you check out a restaurant before making a
dinner reservation, or plan your
summer vacation in Europe.
Now let's go behind the scenes with the Street View car.
This car's story begins with the Street View team adding
the cameras.
We've improved our camera system over the years.
It now has 15 lenses taking 360 degree photos, and is
protected from the elements by this shell.
To ensure the cameras hold up on the road, we take our car
through some rigorous testing to make sure it
can handle any condition.
Driving in the hot, dusty Mojave Desert in California,
the temperatures of the Street View camera system can rise to
a 122 degrees or higher.
We'll also test the Street View camera system for a
variety of road conditions, like the winding and bumpy
roads of the Santa Cruz mountains here in California.
With its training complete, the Street View car just needs
to get dressed up with a Google Maps design.
Now we're ready to hit the road and photograph more sites
to share with you in Google Maps.
