When I need some good kosher food,
there's only three words I need to know:
feed, me, bubbe.
(theme music)
Today, we're going to make a summer soup.
And I was thinking, what can we make?
It's hot today.
Make something simple, make it fast,
and have it taste good with the traditional flavor.
I looked in my cabinet, and what do you think I found?
A can of whole beets.
Well, I'm gonna make it out of the can simple and good,
and we'll all be able to enjoy it
and have something easy within minutes.
I've drained the liquid from the beets
and put them in the saucepan,
adding a can and a half of water to it.
And this, I'll have to boil first.
But then before I do that, I have all my ingredients ready.
And I take the whole beets that are in there
and grate them all.
This way, I have everything prepared
when it's time to mix this.
All set.
Now, take...
First thing you have to do
is boil the beet liquid and the water
before we add any ingredients.
So, come over to my stove,
place the saucepan on the range burner.
And bring it to a boil.
And now, it's time for the Yiddish Word of the Day.
Bubbe, what's today's Yiddish word?
Well, today, Avrom,
it's gonna be a little different.
I was looking through my file with summer recipes,
and I came across this little paper here.
As you can see, it must be old.
I don't know how old it is or where I got it,
but the author is unknown, and it's called "I Got"...
"All I Got Was Words."
And this is the way it goes.
"When I was young and fancy free
My folks had no fine clothes for me"
Oh, by the way, I have to tell you,
it's a little bit like my past when I was growing up.
I'm sorry to interrupt, but I had to tell you.
"When I was young And fancy free
My folks had No fine clothes for me
All I got was words:
Gott zu danken Thank God
Gott vet geben God will provide
Zoll mon nor leben Un zein gezunt
May we all live And be healthy.
When I began to travel far
They couldn't provide me with a car
All I got was words:
Geh gezunterhait Go in good health
Geh pamelach Go slowly
Hob a glikliche reise Have a successful trip.
I wanted to increase my knowledge
But they couldn't afford to send me to college
All I got was words:
Hob seichel Have good sense
Zei nisht kein naar Don't be a fool
Torah is die beste schoire
Torah is the best merchandise.
The years have flown, The world has turned
Things I have forgotten, Things I have learned
Yet still I remember
Zog dem emes Tell the truth
Gib tsedakah Give to charity
Hob rachmanos Have compassion
Zei a mensch Be a mensch.
All I got was words
Pity those who never got the words."
So, what would... I mean, that's unbelievable.
All those wonderful words and expressions in Yiddish.
But what would that make the Yiddish Word of the Day?
Well, it's a poem.
And in Yiddish, you would say poeme.
The only thing is with an English derivation,
it would be spelled P-O-E-M-E.
A poem.
So, poem is poeme.
Yeah. I hope you enjoyed listening.
Well, thank you, everyone.
By the way, I just want to mention
on me.dium,
M-E, dot, D-I-U-M, dot, C-O-M, dot com.
Well, it's me.dium.com, not me.dium.com.com.

The liquid has come to a boil.
And now, I'm going to add my ingredients.
My onion powder, my garlic powder and the salt.
Also, lemon juice,
three to four tablespoons of lemon juice.
And when you're making it the first time,
put a little less.
A quarter to a third of sugar.
And you really have to adjust to everyone's taste
a little different.
I like it a little sweeter.
And you'll have to use your judgement.
Give it a stir.
Then add the beets that you shredded.
Grated beets.
Give it a stir.
Let it come to a boil.
Place the cover on the pot.
Place it back on low.
And let it cook for 20 minutes
so that all the flavors will blend.
I've taken my beet borscht after 20 minutes
and placed it in a bowl.
Let it cool.
And then placed it in the refrigerator
so it would really get good and cold.
And this is the way I serve it.
This is what the grated beets, which makes it a little thinker,
which is nice for a soup.
But you know, some people like to drink it,
so I take the clear borscht and mix it with sour cream
and drink as a cold drink.
It's refreshing and delicious.
And it's optional. Do what you like.
Sour cream, actually, is a topping.
Other people like cucumbers.
Add a little cucumber, which is one way of doing it.
Or a boiled potato, which is the old-fashioned standard.
Just boil a whole potato, add it to your cold borscht.
And then, take some sour cream.
Low-fat sour cream, by the way.
Add a good dollop of it.
And you have a delicious meal on a hot summer evening,
for supper or for lunch.
Serve with a good piece of kosher rye bread,
sliced kosher rye bread.
It's just out of this world.
Ess gezunterhait.
See you next time.
Hi, Bubbe. This is Paula.
And I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your show.
My own grandmother passed away some years ago,
and she made all these recipes.
And it's so wonderful to actually see
the food being recreated.
And it brings back a lot of memories.
So, thank you. We're watching.
Bye.
