Whistler Bungee Jumping Adventure
Shannen: I’m talking with Lani Barnaba, our BC Adventure expert. Lani how are you?[pause]
Lani: I’m good, thank you Shannen.[pause]
Shannen: Good, this week we’ve got some exciting activities up in Whistler, you have
been telling me about Whistler Bungee Jumping.[pause]
Lani: Indeed.[pause]
Shannen: Tell me about it, it’s obviously jumping off a bridge attached to a bungee
cord, but, what are the details?[pause]
Lani: Well, that’s exactly right, Theresa bungee is located about 20 minutes south of
Whistler. Fairly close to the village, you can self drive out to the bridge or if you
don’t have transportation, we can organize a pick up from the village, transport you
out to the bridge and then once you get out there you can sign waivers and jump off the
bridge which is a 160 feet high.[pause]
Shannen: and you jump off the bridge, what’s down below? Some bridges have creeks or lakes,
what’s down below? What’s the area like?[pause]
Lani: The area is actually really spectacular out there, it’s very scenic. You’re jumping
over the Cheakamus River, so directly above water. Actually you don’t catch the water
at the Whistler bungee, but you’ll definitely get spectacular views over the river. Really
nice scenery out there![pause]
Shannen: An when you jump, I know some people like to go feet first or from their waist,
what are the different options that you can do with the bungee? [pause]
Lani: You can pretty much jump however you like, there are those options. You can go
ankles first tied by the feet, you can jump by the waist, you can jump tandem – strapped
to your friend. We even had people in wheel chairs or with disabilities that can jump,
we tied the bungee cords to the chairs. Definitely there are a lot of options and you can discuss
the different ways with the jump masters when you get out on the site. You can choose how
you would like to go; certainly lots of ways - you can go face first, back first, you can
jump straight off, it’s really up to the individual to choose, lots of options there.[pause]
Shannen: Lots of options and exciting possibilities there, what about ages? How old you have to
be in order to jump?[pause]
Lani: There’s really no minimum age, young kids can jump even as young as, you know,
4 and 5. They do have to be able to listen to instructions, obviously be aware of what
they are doing and have parents with them. So just a bit of maturity there and, you know,
understanding and being able to follow instructions basically. But there is no real age restriction,
so the guides do, you know, test children at the bridge and just make sure they can
comprehend everything before they allow them to go, so all ages can basically jump.[pause]
Shannen: Wow, 4 years old being able to jump off a bridge! So, I guess that brings up the
next question is: How safe is Bungee jumping?[pause]
Lani: It’s really safe, the jump masters out there have over 17 years of experience
and each client is weighed and we have different cords that are specific to each weight. So
all the cord are also monitored and how many jumps they’ve actually done and each cord
has a maximum number of jumps as soon as you reach that level, then new cords are purchased.
So, extremely safe, we’ve been doing it for a long time. All the equipment is usually
high tech and definitely maintained really well out there.[pause]
Shannen: and Whistler is known mostly for winter activities, is this something that
is only available on summer or when can you go bungee jumping?[pause]
Lani: Yeah, bungee’s year round, so you can go winter and summer. The summer months
is extended hours so it’s a lot longer and more viability. It’s open usually from about
12 o’clock until, you know, 5 in the afternoon. During the winter months it’s a little bit
reduced. Availability in the bridge is usually open from about 2pm to 4pm based on bookings,
but it’s certainly viable everyday throughout the year.[pause]
Shannen: have you been bungee jumping?[pause]
Lani: absolutely![pause]
Shannen: Yeah? And did you enjoy it?[pause]
Lani: it’s the best experience anyone can ever do, it’s extremely exhilarating![pause]
