At the Minnesota Department of Revenue, we understand that sometimes you cannot afford
to pay your state taxes in full when they are due. Whenever possible, we’ll work with
you to find a reasonable solution to help meet any tax or payment obligation.
We encourage you to pay at least part of what you owe when you file your return. If you
don’t file and pay in full by the due date, penalties and interest charges will be added
to any unpaid balance. Then we’ll send you a tax bill.
You can also make payment arrangements on any debt collected by the Minnesota Department
of Revenue. If you get a bill from us, it’s best to pay the full amount to avoid additional
penalties and interest. If you can’t afford to pay all at once, you can request a payment
plan to settle your debt over time.
Individuals can request a payment plan through our website. To do so, you’ll need to have
your: Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
Checking or savings account number and bank’s routing number
Email address, and Letter ID number, from the top right corner
of our tax bill or notice.
When you’re ready to begin, go to revenue.state.mn.us
In the “Individuals” section, click on “e-Services information”
Then click on “Set up a payment agreement" Scroll to “Online Payment Agreements”
and click on “department’s payment agreement system”
Follow the instructions on each screen to propose a payment plan.
There is a $50 fee each time you set up a payment plan. This fee is added to what you
owe and included in the plan.
If the terms you propose are accepted, we’ll send a payment plan confirmation to your email
address. Otherwise, we’ll ask you to contact the department’s Collection Division to
discuss your situation.
For more information on paying your taxes, visit our website at revenue.state.mn.us and
