Francheska by Luis Miranda (Translated by Victor H Ortiz)
Cuarto Poder
Francheska is a victim of a rare disease
that has made of her short life, unbearable
she is allergic to 94% of the food
each ingredient in any food can cause her intestines to become poisoned
which can lead her to suffer endless diarrhea and bleeding
that can only be controlled
with hospitalizations
She has had this disease her lifetime
she cannot go to school
she can not lead a normal life
she suffers from endless pain for seven years
(Mother) it is more than
six years that I have to deal with this and...
and I really don't want for any child to have this disease...
I am begging
to the
government of Peru to give a budget for research to fight this devastating disease
because my daughter is not the only girl
many children like her need help
with special nutrition
(Reporter) Her robust cheeks give her the wrong appearance.
it's actually the product of steroids
contents
of medicines she consumed
the truth is that she always is on the verge of malnutrition
only last year she was admitted in the emergency room 18 times and so far this year 10.
(Mother) There was a Christmas Day
that she was waiting anxiously... and we asked, dear
what do you want for Christmas?
Nothing mom...
I want you to buy my medication, I just want my medication.
because you do not have money to buy something else.
I remember my sister gave her 10 Peruvian soles ($3) and she bought a volleyball
and she put it in a bag
and put it under the Christmas tree, and she said this is my gift
and she couldn't open it because she was admitted to the emergency room on Christmas Day.
and we had her hospitalized.
and that really makes a big impact in my life
she is a child
a girl
and children... I have been a girl, we have illusions
she is a child, but she understand She said no Mommy..
when someone give her allowances, she save it
Mommy this money is for my medication with this I'm going to buy my especial formula
I gonna need it! and she has a purse.
I'm almost there, I have one hundred ($38) my uncle
gave me so much, my cousin gave me so much...
and I'm putting together a hundred but more money is needed, no mommy? I said, dear
why don't you buy yourself a doll? and she said, no.. Why?
I need to take my medication
I need to take what I have been prescribed no?
even thought she's a little girl she has mature...
she's a sweet little girl
but her behavior has change drastically she cries...
how can she not cry? the pain is constant
(Reporter) this is a symptomatic disease in a modern world
where many children are getting sick by overeating
but with Francheska is the opposite "She you can not eat"
because almost every food make her ill
(Mother) I wish...
that someone turned her suffering inside out.
is not easy for my little girl
to be medicated 10 times a day
I could not bear to take so many pills
but she says, she does want to feel good
when...
when she is sick and vomiting, vomiting and vomiting she faints..
and diarrhea... .. no ..
she lose consciousness.
and sometimes when she reacts, she said, mom have the doctors
perform surgeries on me, what ever it takes...
I rather die, I cannot take it anymore
many years...
many years with a child living with chronic pain.
(Francheska)Why you're crying? (Mother)I'm not crying, I'm sad...
I had remembered your grandmother
I just saw her picture
Is true
(Reporter) her medical condition is called
Eosinophilic Colitis
An incurable
disease that doctors know little about
a disease that can only be alleviated with a costly enzyme
that cost 6,450 Soles ($2464.74)monthly
the formula which is capable of feed the child
but does not tastes good
Francheska was born doomed to not be able to taste food, the food that everyone
consumed not only to subsist but for pleasure
two of my husband friends had.
given away two cans
and the insurance gave us 4 cans
As for cost? 215 Peruvian soles ($95.91)
how many she need a month? 30 cans a month
28 to 30 ..
and that comes out to?
nearly 7000 soles ($2675) a month...
in addition to the 2,000 ($764)budget we have for her medication
and diet the girl needs? no ..
that's
a total of 9.000 ($3439)Peruvian soles...
9.000 ($3439) soles to support her?
that is why we pray and ask for our health insurance to help us
for ..
the full treatment
This formula (Neocate)
is the only source of life for my child
(Reporter) the girl takes a many drugs per day
that she known them by name, like the chocolates or sweets that she cannot
ingest
what is the name of this med dear? omeprazole. this to prevent? what? for gastritis
you take this every day, right?
before breakfast
half hour before breakfast ..
and why do you take the prenizona cheska?
for the pain
and this one, she uses... what is this call? Enterogermino is to protect the intestinal
flora, because whenever she makes bowel movements
she always gets the runs, always.. what do you call this? Zinc
why do you take Zinc for? To grow.
(Reporter) the worst of this disease is that has also condemned the whole family
the cost of hospitalization and
All the medicines are expensive, due to that they
had to sell their own home and then their car
and their motorcycle
their belongings, their furniture, their refrigerator
(Mother) I have a freezer that someone has loaned to me
that it is designed for selling ice creams
a kitchen table
and my children's bed
only .
and all that you see around me and ..
things that we have not been able to finish, I have this house because my mom ..
has left us, she passed away.
(Reporter) The mother, Julissa Ruiz
had to leave her teaching job
to dedicate all her time to the girl. She should have subjected her self to an operation
to removed a cysts. But she can not leave her daughter without attention
Ronald, her father had to give up a good job in the provinces to seek
another that allows him to be near home
all expenses of the child's disease make it impossible for this family of
Satellite city to give their other 17 years old child a higher education
despite his excellent qualifications
Several universities
has give him free admission
I think I've sacrificed my self enough studying and ..
to not have that facility
of other kids who can afford a university
or an institute
the only thing that is left is,
work
it's not fair, it's not? No, it is not fair
I know that..
I can work and study at the same time, I will do my best..
I know I can..
what do you like best about your sister? I like her smile, when she laughs
I like to see her happy
I do not like to see her sad or crying
There are time when she's sad
because she needs to be admitted to the hospital
because she is ill...
how do they call? she gets diarrhea
because of her disease
and she gets sad
and she said Frank please don't leave me
I do not want be sick, no, no I don't want to go back to the hospital
I like her smile and I like to see her happy.
this exceeds the colitis health budget
the enzymes which keep her stable are not considered
medicines
but food and their insurance does not required to provide
however they have partially
provided an small part of the treatment
there are only seven recognized cases of this rare disease in Peru
but what is known is that there more than 30 cases
and may be more.
a bad characteristic of our times where chemical and food allergies
appear more frequently
in our children
a disease that is finally being diagnosed
and deserves more attention
a disease that turns food into
venom and have painful consequences
For the people who have not grasped that part
or could not see this story from the beginning
this is a girl who has a allergy
very undesirable, that makes it difficult for her to eat almost anything and if you are
confuse about her healthy appearance
actually the girl looks chubby
but that is not caused by feeding, the child is malnourished
her appearance is caused by taking cortisone and by other drugs
that make her swell.
we see her smile and in good spirit because she
is surrounded by the love of her family and as
her brother said that she has a good spirit but in reality she is not happy
and she cannot easily smile because she is going through tough times
and that is why we have desired to bring this report to you
you may ask, but why the story of a girl?
because it is a dramatic case
and indeed in which we may be able to help
I think that's important that this type of reporting
travel far
and everyone that can do something
actually , do.
can be in different areas, for example...
I'll start with the part that has not as much about the girl but it moves my self
especially, as the loving brother who is 17 years old with
good grades that has demonstrated good effort all his life, is a child who can not study
due to the situation of his family
there must be an educational institution facilities that can help
so that he can follow a career that will facilitate a job that at the same
time let him study and support him on this attempt. The boy has shown
and demonstrated ability and effort in his life
he must have to find an answer in the world
an answer
it must be
someone who will give a scholarship to give him an option for him so that
someday he can help his family because if he starts working at age 17 in
reality, he is doomed to probably not make much money
and to not be what he could become
as to the family obviously can one imagine what it is to spend 9.000 ($3439)
soles (Peruvian money) in one child?
let's see if we can get the insurance to support, however in the meantime
any help is welcome .. the phone 5 5 3 4 4 6 8
9 9 4 -9 6 2
4 4 8
Hopefully many people reply to this This request for help, it is not only a
drama is your chance to make difference in someone's life
