‘Dead By Daylight’ vs. ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’: What’s Better?
The asymmetrical multiplayer genre is suddenly becoming crowded with games like Evolve, Dead By Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game. Okay, we were kidding about Evolve, what ever happened to that game?.
On paper, this should be an easy discussion to have. Dead By Daylight has been out longer, already had an established player base and it’s free of many of the bugs that are plaguing Friday the 13th.
That makes Dead By Daylight the clear winner right? Not so fast.
Yes, Dead By Daylight costs just $20 compared to $40 for Friday the 13th: The Game. That price may loom large over someone’s head when they are deciding which game to pick up.
However, the prices are a lot closer than they seem.
For $40, Friday the 13th will get you 10 counselors and six different Jasons, each based on a different installment in the film franchise. For $20, Dead By Daylight will give you access to six survivors and four killers.
Additional DLC will bring the price closer to around $40 and you will get an extra three survivors and three more killers. That pretty much evens the playing field for both games when it comes to price.
Of course, you can opt to not get the DLC and save yourself some money, which would end up meaning Dead By Daylight is marginally cheaper.
Both games are asymmetrical multiplayer titles, which means it’s 1v4 or 1v8 depending on the game. Dead By Daylight pits one killer against four survivors while Friday the 13th features eight survivors.
If you prefer more players, Friday The 13th is the way to go. More players mean more ways for those players to work together.
Friday the 13th also boasts a considerable amount of ways to survive the night. You can call the police, escape by boat or car, or simply wait out the 20 minute clock.
Dead By Daylight only features one main way for escape: repair the five generators, open the gate, escape.
If you are the last survivor, you will be able open the hatch for escape, provided you have repaired at least two generators and can find the hatch.
Friday the 13th gives you a lot more variety in ways to escape and that’s adds to the game’s longevity.
You could even kill Jason if you wanted to, but this is a very rare experience and requires a lot of things to go right for your counselors.
Friday The 13th: The Game features a stamina bar where in Dead By Daylight, you can just run forever. Jason is also really powerful and you’ll die way more often than you escape.
Friday The 13th got my heart racing in a way that didn’t seem possible in Dead By Daylight. There’s a lot less at risk in DBD, you can almost play it on auto-pilot.
Friday the 13th relies a lot on random number generation which may discourage a lot of players. No game will have the same locations for the items so you’ll have to ransack every house you come across.
It’s also increasingly difficult to juke Jason, he’ll usually always catch you, even if you get away the first or second time.
In Dead By Daylight, you can always abuse the “pallet-loop” technique, which is somehow still in the game, to endlessly juke the killer.
Dead By Daylight does boast more maps than Friday The 13th: The Game, so it has that going for it.
Friday the 13th only comes with three maps at launch and it’s possible more could be added in through future updates. The killer variety is much better in Dead By Daylight as well.
Most of the Jasons more or less play like re-skins of each other where the killers in Dead By Daylight operate completely different.
These are two things that Friday The 13th can’t yet compete with and those are strong reasons to lean toward Dead By Daylight.
One thing that will set Friday the 13th:The Game apart for many is the addition of a single-player mode. The developers have promised to add in the mode this summer while Dead By Daylight does not have a single-player mode.
We think this addition will further cement Friday The 13th as the superior game. That said, you can’t go wrong with either and it comes down to preference. Obviously, Jason Voorhees will attract more people since he’s a recognizable name.
In the end, it boils down to gameplay and once all the bugs are worked out with Friday The 13th, I think that is the game everyone should flock to.
With all that said, I still believe Dead By Daylight is a good game. It’s both fun to watch and fun to play, not many games can say that.
If you’re a fan of the genre, both games will give you something to go back to over and over.
Although I enjoy Friday The 13th more, there will be people that both agree and disagree with me and that’s okay. It all boils down to what you’re looking for in a game.
Dead By Daylight is looking to challenge Friday The 13th on all fronts with its release on consoles later this month. Dead By Daylight releases for PS4 and Xbox One on June 20.
